Ever pay for an ebay purchase by check, but never receive it?

Won This item on ebay, sent a check, the check was cashed, but the coin never showed up. Come to find out he had previously sold the same coin on some site called epier to two other people (but for much less) and the same thing happened to them. Any advice on how to proceed?

Thanks

John-

I would immediately file mail fraud charges.

    BTW, that's a hijacked account.

How can one tell when an account is hijacked?

    Thanks, Russ,

  • what a bummer - I know this doesnt help, but several folks on this forum have warned about purchasing high-priced key date coins through ebay without knowing the integrity of the seller - file for mail fraud immediately - this is where PAYPAL is worth its weight in gold - hope you find this AH and prosecute him to the fullest extent of the law!!

Dormant for nearly two years, then a handful of cheap purchases, then listing a valuable coin and refusing to accept PayPal.

    FLorida,
You're consistently recommending only using paypal. I understand that can be a good solution if you're unsure about a dealer. And I do take paypal if necessary. But in the last 2 days I've recieved $12,000 in checks from buyers for purchases made w/o the protection of paypal or even the chance to leave negative feedback on ebay. Paypal fees would have been several hundred dollars and I'd rather split the money with the buyers than have it go to paypals bottom line. Perhaps you are an ebay stockholder, I'm not.

These buyers sent me checks because I am trustworthy. A coin dealer lives and dies by his reputation and I would suggest rather than just blindly running everything thru paypal to do more due diligence on the seller and make sure he is trustworthy. Most actually are. If you can't get a good feeling about a seller then move on or fall back to paypal.

ugh. this is terrible. i am sorry for your loss and russ has good advice.
you should do much more research before buying a multi 1000 dollar coin from
a seller with such little feedback.
  • It's been over a month since you won the auction and almost 2 weeks since your OP, John - what measures have you taken since then, and have there been any results?

You sent a check to a physical address didn't you ? It was cashed, wasn't it ?
Mail Fraud is mail fraud. Just because they used eBay as an instrument in their game, they are still subject to the law.

Not sure if that is good news for the OP or not. Hope some assets were recovered. At least good news for future possible victims. --Jerry
  • YO Ho HO, is this the thread I asked about that you all were accusing me about ???

If not, dude, almost 6 grand! Get on the cops, pay a visit in person or do something, FBI online fraud complaint. 6 grand, something will be done.

And I am still waiting for my apology for the accusation that it was me! HA

I agree 100%. People look at paypal as if they were a super hero of some sort. Not to say they don't offer a service-But-if a person is out to scam you-it's going to happen. Paypal will not run down the street and whoop on some guy because he is bad and they can't produce funds if a account doesn't have them. If you want protection your better off using your best credit card.

  • I have to doubt this story, now way would someone be able to be ripped of 6 thousand dollars and nothing happen. Unless whoever sent the money was a total moron. I think this is BS.

ease off the trigger jimbo! we know you dislike some forum members

ebay scams happen daily from accounts that are hijacked by crooks.
a lot of people are not aware of the signs to be worried about the
    auctions.

feel bad for the person, do not call them names! lets hope they
get some money back from the crook!
  • if its Big Buffalo dork than he deserves it, considering he was the one who decided to set me up on one of my auctions and try to ruin it, thank god for second chance offers! Now, this made my day, actually, I am glad he got ripped off for 6grand if it is real. But I have to doubt it, what did he fall for that old Nigeria scammm ?? No way he sent someone 6 grand, then just sat there like a retard and said "I wonder when its comming" ?? Common, the police have do work on ebay fraud, he woulda had some results. So he is BSing.

he actually stated in a different post that the crook was arrested.
so he did take action to get satisfaction from the person.

These buyers sent me checks because I am trustworthy.

With all due respect, trustworthy is only as good as the person's current situation. Many a "trustworthy" fell by the wayside (some that were members in good standing on this very board) due to circumstances beyond their control and some through circumstances that should have been in their control. No one really knows what they or anyone else would do given dire or difficult circumstances.

Business is business. If the seller does not take PayPal, I move on, simple as that.
