Anyone Give out Coins to non-collectors for Christmas?

I did. Some of my young nephews got a Peace Silver dollar. I had a little fun answering all the questions about it.

Yeah, my business partner is going to get a 1955 Proof Set (flat) from the year he was born for his present tonight........

He'll probably look at it and say, "What the %#@* is this??!!??".

Even though a good rule of thumb for giving Xmas presents is to "give what you would like to receive yourself", it doesn't always hold true.... :

gave some 1st year 2007 Australia Koala Bear Silver Dollars out to my assistants - both thought they looked pretty - told them to save it - might be worth something more than melt in a few years.

About 2 weeks ago, 2 kids rang my doorbell wanting to shovel my walkways after about a 1" snow flurry. They wanted $2 each. Upon completion, I paid them the money, and gave each of them an AG3 seated dime. They both acted like it was the neatest thing they ever saw. Since I had about $4 into each of the dimes, and paid another $4 in cash, it cost me a total of $12 to have the shoveling done that would have taken me at least 30 mins to do. Not to mention saved me from a sore back, and possibly created a couple of YN's!

I put the first three presidents in 2x2s and handed them out to everyone in the office. I couldn't find a bank that had the Madison dollar so everyone got just the first three. When I do find a bank with them, I'll buy a roll, mount them, and distribute.
"These are the funniest quarters I've ever seen." "Do they fit in slot machines?" "What year are they?" "Are they real gold?" You've heard all the questions.

Why would you ever give a key date coin to any NON COLLECTOR? That simply makes no sense!

It was for wifey who is somewhere in between a non-collector and a dabbler. She always wanted one but in PCGS 64 red.

I fished out proof sets that I purchased for my sons and grand kids and gave them to them as presents this year. They seemed interested to learn about the Proof process. The years for these sets were 1968, 1970, 1996 and 1998. They were surprised to learn the 1998 was the most valuable.
I also give my nephew a new ASE each year. He has a mixed group of coins from his late father and only passive interest as he's busy working 60 hours a week and rasing two little boys. Maybe someday the hook will set and he'll become active.

I gave my step grandson who just turned 8 a roll of state quarters and the books to put them in. He messed with those longer than any of his toys Even got my son involved helping him find the mint marks and what they meant. There is hope

Yup - a presidential proof four coin set (the first four) - the Madison was a PF70, the rest were PF69s. He also got a 2007 Silver eagle PF70 EARLY RELEASES. Since I have hundreds of each, they are easy to give out to my nephews. In addition, since I am now pretty decent at prescreening the presidential proofs, I can afford to give out the occasional 70s to relatives! My nephew thinks they are treasures!

My father-in-law is a professor and scholar of Vermont history and government, and every time the subject of my coin collecting comes up he asks me about Vermont coppers. I happened to run into a reasonably affordable (if doggone ugly) one of these a few months ago, so I bought it for him. He seemed enthusiastic enough -- never gets visibly excited about anything really, but seemed to think his students might find it interesting, popped it (in its flip) into his wallet ... seems like the kind of thing he might get a kick out of showing people. I hope so. But hell, if I struck out and got him something he doesn't like, that just makes this Christmast just like all the others. So, it was worth a try.

Oh yes, that's all I gave for Christmas was coins.
Everyone on my list got a bright shiney new state quarter.
Nothing else, since this is my way to get them interested in numismatics.
I can't understand why they all think I'm a cheap .................

I gave the Presidential Proofs to the Grandkids and friends. The response was great.

Gave out a small copper Roman coin at a church event, said that it may be the one the widow (mite) gave in the bible. Group thought it was very cool.

I gave out 6 walking liberty half dollars encased in airtites to my nephews along with their normal 10 dollars in scratch offs. Of course, they were more interested in the scratch off's, but oh well-----they have every earthly possession a child could want so I didn't expect much. I did hope for it though. My best friend's daughter who is 10 years old will be getting a very cool small treasure chest filled with loose coins and gem stones next month for her birthday. I'm going to make a pirate's treasure map and have her hunt for it in the yard. And yes, I'm burying it! HA! She'll get a KICK out of this because she's into "pirate's booty". I will make her into one of us eventually! ha

Yup......all the kids in my family received their annual gift of the current year ASE.....the teenagers think they are cool...the little ones couldn't care less....but they will appreciate it years down the road.

My gal friend loves horses....got her one of the Australian Lunar Year of the Horse silver coins...2002.....got her a nice deluxe after-market case and box to keep it in...she was thrilled.

a couple people on my secret Santa list got some George Washington 1982 Commems....

as for me.....nothing coin related was given to me.....that sucks..

I gave QDB's "The Expert's Guide ot collecting and investing in rare coins" to my grandpa for christmas. He read it the whole time he was here.

I gave a 2002 silver american eagle at the office party as a white elephant gift. A young guy ended up with it, maybe it will spark an interest in coins with him.

My best friend's daughter who is 10 years old will be getting a very cool small treasure chest filled with loose coins and gem stones next month for her birthday. I'm going to make a pirate's treasure map and have her hunt for it in the yard. And yes, I'm burying it! HA! She'll get a KICK out of this because she's into "pirate's booty". I will make her into one of us eventually! ha >>
