A question about verdegris on a copper/bronze coin.

What is your best method of getting rid of it? I have a bunch of bronze medals that have verdegris on them. Share your secrets, please!!!

  • Marty...there have been a bunch of threads on that subject. Most I think concern themselves with olive oil. mineral oil, etc..... I have found in my personal experience that air tool oil works really well. An odd choice for certain, but it is a lightweight oil that is primarily used in displacing water that may form in air powered tools, as well as lubricate them. I have had some proof cents soaking in it for 3 years now, just to see if the carbon spots they had would grow any larger. So far, the spots have stayed as they were, surfaces still look good (aside from the carbon spots). I recently soaked a 1812 large cent with some crud and verdegris on it for about 3 months. It cleaned up very well. Good luck in your search!!

I had a tip some time ago... that a quick soak in white vinegar (about ten minutes), rinse with water, then acetone soak, will remove verdigris quickly. I tried it, and it was successful, with no ill effects. Cheers, RickO
