This sold for this?!!!

You've got be kidding! I've seen this get called as AT in some circles - maybe it's the holder this time. Not really a horrible looking coin, but it sue looks like a recent dip and retone to me.

This particular bustie was discussed at length right here... image

  • That is a strong price for that coin in AU58 with nice toning.

  • Compared to common date Morgan dollars graded ms 64 with monster toning and selling for $3000 plus,
I don't see this coin as overpriced.
I can't tell from the picture whether or not the toning is natural or "doctored".
I can, with a good deal of accuracy, differentiate between the two when given the chance to examine the coin in hand.
It seems that whenever a wildly toned coin is posted, at least 75% of the respondents automatically tag it as AT or cleaned.
I do not and will not attempt to appraise a client's coins from pictures.
I insist on seeing the coins in hand before offering even a "ball park" opinion. Dave W.

I wouldn't be a buyer for the coin at the price it sold for.

I would have paid a premium for the coin if it was offered.

I don't know if the coin is AT or NT but I do know I like it.

Yup, even stronger for an AU53.

Walkerman's assessment is well stated... no one will ID AT 100% of the time... but in hand is most reliable. Some doctors are VERY good. Cheers, RickO

Why do so many here seem to get their undies in such a bundle just because smoeone pays more fore something than they would? I see lots of stuff posted here that I wouldn't give more than face or bullion value for yet I don't constantly comment about those that do.
YES, IT DID SELL FOR THAT!!image

More to the point: A true collector assembling a toned bustie set would have no problem paying even more that this one if it fit into his set like none he had seen for a while.
As a dealer hoping to resell it in a timely manner I might not pay so much, but as a true collector I might pay what would seem stupid money to enhance my collection to my satisfaction.
If there had been one more bidder that really wanted this coin it would probably have sold for an even higher price.
So which is it when some of you are deciding what a coin is worth to you, a dealer's appraisal or a collector's desire? Dave W
