Selling an important card: 1964 Venezulean Topps Pete Rose PSA 4 (highest ever graded!)

UPDATE: Six days left: $ 81.00 high bid

Just a heads-up!

I recently listed an extremely rare Pete Rose card. A 1964 Topps Venezuelean, very few of these are around, and most raw examples would be "PSA 1's".

My PSA 4 may just be the "finest known" example. So, all you fellow Pete Rose junkies, "bid your bottoms off"! image

Happy holidays to all!

  • "Cancelled: Dec-26-07 04:34:08 PST"

"Explanation: The seller ended the listing early and cancelled all bids."

  • looks like he got an offer outside of the bay...

    Hi!

    Just a heads-up!

Jeff Knorth, (who has been the #1 pete rose master PSA set guy for years now), who has purchased a ton of my Pete Rose collection, asked me if I would end this auction early.

Normally, I do not like ending auctions early with bids on them, but how could I refuse Jeffrey! I didn't

He made me, what I though was a very generous offer but I didn't do it just for the money, as I was pretty sure I could get more for the card from my auction. In fact I know someone who had a snipe bid on it for $1000.

But in the spirit of Xmas, and being an ex #1 PSA set person myself, I had "first hand knowledge" just how important it is to obtain a rare card such as this one (plus he did make me a generous offer!)....

    So 'Merry Xmas' Jeff!

Anyway, if I recall, I picked-up this card raw on ebay for a few bucks, got it slabbed by ebay for my (#5 at the time) Pete Rose master player set.

Anyway, "its all mostly profit on this card", and I'm happy! (...and Jeff's happy too!)...

Sorry if I disappointed anyone by pulling the item. Hope you do understand!

    Happy New Year to all!

I know that kind of thing sours a lot of eBay bidders. Hopefully it wont cost you too many future bidders on upcoming items of yours.

I am not the owner of this one, but it is a nice one indeed.

Hope owner does not mind me showing it. I removed the registry numbers on it.

What you do not see is the reverse. Those Venezulan Topps cards from 1964 are brutal on the reverse (I think mostly from being glued?). Otherwise this card is a knockout PSA 4.

I shipped mine already, but I recall, it displayed a better than average reverse, with no glue or missing paper, which I'm sure had to do with me receiving a PSA 4 grade.

And I'll bet that the reverse on this other example, had some "boo boo's", which led to PSA giving it a 4?

But I'd take it in a heartbeat for a Rose master registry set, just try to find another!!

WHY NOT JUST OFFER IT TO JEFF IN THE FIRST PLACE? I FOR ONE WILL NEVER BID ON ONE OF YOUR AUCTIONS AGAIN! caps for effect.

I SECOND THAT....Dont list it for sale to the general public if its not..This is what car saleman are famous for..BAIT AND KEEP THE SWITCH!!!!
  • Isn't that a violation of ebay policy?

That being said, why in the sam hell would anyone post a link here on the message boards that the card was for sale on ebay, generate a lot of interest in it, then sell it privately? That is just plain stupid and will more than likely lose you several furture ebay bids (mine for sure).

What is even more stupid is that you were "pretty sure" you could get more for the card, but sold it for less anyway... if you are going to piss off a lot of people you should have at least gotten top dollar doing it. image

One of the legitamate reasons for ending an Ebay auction early is "Item is no longer available for sale." I believe that this qualifies. image

    Cool card, Bob. image

  • From ebay's TOS:

Bidders are permitted to contact sellers with requests to end a listing early and sell at the current bid price...
-at the time he ended it, the high bid was $150?... something tells me he didn't sell it for 150.

Both buyers and sellers cannot interfere with a transaction or offer to buy or sell listed items outside of the eBay site

Seeing as how he probably learned of the card from this site, and not ebay, its borderline against their rules... however, its just a plain shady practice all together. I don't know how many times over the years I have been asked to end an auction early, but declined because it would not have been fair to the other bidders. Afterall, you never know what kind of snipes people had set. I have had enough with this thread, and I have added that seller to my ebay "black list".
  • Everyone here that is upset about rbdjr ending his auction early hasn't ever dealt with him. He is one of the classiest guys involved with PSA graded cards. I for one give him thumbs up for admitting why he ended it early and look forward to future business with him.
Next MONTH? So he's saying that if he wins, the best-case scenario is that he'll be paying for it two weeks after the auction ends?

Forget blocking him; find out where he lives and go punch him in the nuts. --WalterSobchak 9/12/12

My point was- why not offer it here first? If the seller had done that before listing it on ebay I would have not said squat. But whatever................

    I'm shocked!

    Good for you.
  • If you mention "Highest graded Pete Rose" JC Korth will be all over it. He has deep pockets and buys up quite a bit. That's one reason my #3 set has sat dormant and made me lose interest. Back to the subject at hand, it's his card and what he chooses to do with it is his business. I have done some business with rbdjr1 and have no issues with his business practices. I don't think he set out to deceive anyone. My question is why pull the auction if you know it will go for more than $1000. Freinds are friends but friends don't feed my family.

lol maybe Bob's family isn't hungry. I agree, normally Bob is a straight shooter. Nothing ever good comes from a situation like this. Had the card had no bids is one thing, once they get bids it is best to let it go. You are correct thoug,h it is his card and he can pull it at anytime. he may have been better off just saying he didn't want to sell it at this time. another example of no good deed goes unpunished.
