Are Liberty dollars and Morgan dollars worth much?

I have about a dozen mostly liberty dollars and a few morgan dollars that my grandfather gave to me. I'm curious as to how much these things normally sell for. I'm not a coin collector and I realize condition is a factor. I was just hoping to get a ballpark guess.

Welcome. If you could give us a list of dates and approximate condition we can give you a ballpark. Pictures, of course, would help. They may be worth anywhere from melt ($10/coin) for common circulated dates up to a lot of money.
Listen. Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government. Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony.

  • Not quite sure what you actually have other than Morgans.

Liberty Head or Morgan Type are the same. Aren't they?

  • Most likely they are common date coins with circulation wear, and would therefore be worth a nominal melt amount (other Board members can help me here ...). However, you should check the date and mintmark on every one, to see if there are any better dates. The last time someone showed me some "family" Morgans, one turned out to be an 1886-O in AU50, worth about $100.

However, if they are uncirculated (no wear, as might be the case if your grandfather saved them from a bank), then there is always the possibility of them being worth more.

P.S. by "Liberty dollars" I think he means Peace dollars !! I have sometimes heard them called Statue of Liberty dollars !!

first things first...do NOT clean them.....nor polish....or dip in a liquid silver cleaner (well....at least not right now!image)

I mistakenly cleaned one of them with a pencil eraser. I was in the 2nd grade when I did it. I just thought it was cool that I had a silver dollar from 1883 that was "shiny". My coins are in a safe deposit box. I'll have to dig them out to see what's there. My grandfather was a serious coin collector so I doubt he gave away anything of great value. He probably would have kept it in his personal collection.

Dang, I'm kind of getting interested in coins. I collect sports cards but I've always been fascinated by old things. Maybe I'll start checking out the local coin shop.

It also depends on the date and mintmark PL

Excellent! You're in a good place to learn about coins, but do your research before you start spending the green or you'll regret it!

The "old dogs" like me say they are over priced.
I've got all mine. Wata we know? If you
wantum getum and watch out for Morgan fakes!!!
The coins are worth what they will bring on
the auction block and it is good now.

Get a Redbook to start... that will quickly show you coins of potential value.. then consult here.. preferrably with pictures. Welcome. Cheers, RickO
