Anybody collect on the fringe of coins

I've suddenly realized that in the last year I've bought or received some coins but for the most part they've been autographed collectibles. Other than that I've just been kind of building on the fringes of my favorites such as Sacagawea's and American Silver Eagles.

I'd like to build a Walking Liberty Half Dollar collection but living overseas it's tough to get raw coins to fill a Dansco with which is what I want to do. While I don't fear ebay I don't see a whole lot of happiness out of buying raw old circulated coins on the bay. So for now I'll continue to pursue autographed and fringe collectibles until that day when I move back home and can catch a show or hit a coin shop.

    hey john,
    merry christmas first things first,

xmas in japan...whuts it like john???
everything in life is but merely on loan to us by our appreciation....lose your appreciation and see

  • Well the Japanese don't really "do" Christmas but they do decorate but all things being equal it's a work day. In fact my daughter who goes to the DOD American School is also enrolled in Japanese school in town. She's a native talker and fluent but we moved to CA when she was 6 so she never really learned to read and write. She's a fourth grader in American School but a third grade equivalent in Japanese School. I won't let her go for more than 2 or 3 days a week. Before she's Japanese or American she's a kid and I'm not going to drive her into the ground. I think my wife would send her 6 days a week.

Anyway, my point is tomorrow is a regular school class day for her in Japanese school and she is major-ly bummed. Very seldom do I put the foot down around here and even more seldom do I win but I have just decreed that there will be no Japanese school tomorrow.

The plus side of living in Japan. EVERYTHING IS OPEN!

I hate to say this but most facilities on base are open as well. The young heros pick this time of year to get depressed and they do a great job of keeping them occupied. Personally if I was in charge I'd tell em to call home and say Merry Christmas then go out in town for lunch and sightseeing.

Christmas in Japan is the best of both worlds.

Is it true that in Japan they call Santa Claus "Annual Gift Man" and he lives on the moon?

  • droopyd,

My wife says no. I do remember seeing a "World Santa" thing on Armed Forces Network once about the Santa Traditions and I don't remember either thing you said, but he wasn't straight up Santa either. As far as my wire or I know Santa is Santa. At Japanese Christmas parties they call him "Santa- San". Mr. Santa essentially.

  • Would you call fractional silver bullion bars "the fringe"? I collect odd sizes of bullion, like 1 gram, 5 gram, and 10 gram mini bars.

One of the things I collect most enthusiastically is coins of the Mexican War for Independence, 1810-22. In the past year, I've purchased some related "Orders and Decorations" (from the ANS collection) and a contemporary book describing the conflict, published and printed in 1818. In the future, I expect to go even further afield. Historical paintings, period antiques and documents would all be great "fringe" additions to the collection. It's all about bringing history to life, and coins are just the starting place.
