I think the only one laughing is the new owner of the coin that this thread was created for. He now owns that beautiful coin, and we don't.
Dizz, you could buy the coin in the OP for me, or the one linked by stman, and I still wouldn't keep either in my collection- they're both garish examples that wouldn't fit in my collection under any circumstances...
My style is impetuous, my defense is impregnable !
Thank goodness we seem to enjoy a wide variety of tastes; and that often our respective tastes evolve and expand sometimes leaving behind things that we no longer hold in appreciation. Not certain that I understand the need to denigrate the tastes and preferences of others.

then feel free to watch beginners get taken for a ride.
if a beginner likes dipped out cleaned polished coins, who are we to poke fun at them for not understanding what they are buying?
if a person likes crazy colored coins and does not care what lies underneath the toning nor cares how the color came about... who are we to poke fun at them?
remember kids, collect what you like! you will never get buried in coins when you have a keen motto like that.
i also noticed jdil did not give an opinion on any of the coins, but instead decided to question our posting styles.
it is posts like this that must make coin doctors drool in anticipation of the profits they can make off people who do not think about very large dollar purchases. over exuberance comes to mind.
and how many people have to chime in before the consensus is that the coin is pretty darn ugly? that if you wish to be in the minority feel free to get ribbed a bit by the majority who thinks differently then you.

au contraire, fc. While my initial post was cryptic, I was the first to weigh in. Sometimes a rowboat of words conveys a battleship of thought. And, hopefully, does not incite a verbal riot.
For what it is worth, I do not like the obv of the coin in question. The reverse does hold some appeal but I would not pursue this coin.
The 1807 listed later does not offend but I'd want to see in hand before commiting $1400. I am not a fan of toned over cleaning hairlines.
I also suspect that there is a history between some of the posters that influences the dialogue. Not privy to it, though. Also, lets keep in mind that we are sharing information primarily. It is so easy to misinterpret written comments as this is a woefully imperfect mode of communication.
Then again, fc, you must not have read the thread well since you posited that I did not offer an opinion - and I clearly did.
heh, i did miss that informative post containing the one word "pricey!!!"
sorry about that jdil. i normally skip posts that contain no useful information and/or an opinion that consists of at least a fragment of a sentence.
"i would not pursue this coin" "I am not a fan of toned over cleaning hairlines."
so my post of "color crazy" seems rather appropriate eh? to chase coins or like coins based on the color alone... one might call that color crazy?!?
sorry jdil. your high road tatic does not play well on an online forum.
dizzy also likes to play the i am more polite card also.. it never works well for him either. down the road we will see another post from him stating this color thing is bad news and he will watch his wallet more carefully in the future.
but then later on he changes his mind. then flips again. then again.
There are some who express their adverse opinions with at least a shred of professionalism and insight
then there are those, who do have professional presentation that do not know the behind from their front.

The harsh reality of it all is quite simple. Standard looking but of course original skinned coins without the "wow" factor of color toning will always remain at idle. Beautifully toned coins that pass muster with NGC and especially PCGS will always and I mean ALWAYS command collector attention, praise, and in turn big $. Anyone can make an attempt at down playing it or even blasting it, but this is nothing more than an effort in futility. Plain and simple. If anyone needs validation for this opinion, please check out any auction archives of beautifully toned coins and also check out some of the asking prices throughout the hobby. The monster coins with monster prices may not get gobbled up immediately at their many multiples of guide, but eventually they likely will find their way into some of the more noteable collections.

Well, fc, your apparent advocacy for taking the low road should not play well anywhere. Funny thing, your prior comments to this post did not prompt my response. One thinks of Shakespeare when assessing your reply to my post. Ya, know, the one about protesting too much? I will not endeavor to understand your motivation. I usually do not comment on the denigrations but it was Christmas eve and that more than anything else prompted my comment.
Dizzy's endorsement of the coin stands on its own. Ironically, it is kind of the inverse of the above ref to Shakespeare. I think most have the sense to realize when something is overhyped. Some have to learn from experience first but that is a lasting lesson.Text

It was cleaned long ago, it toned back nice and pretty, it looks less than original, but I still like it.
However, the price makes no sense to me. I'd rather have a perfectly original 62 for the same money, even if the colors are less dramatic.

Steve, that CBH may not have the look of originality and may not be what most hardcore collectors like, but it sure is pretty.

As long as it stays locked in that PCGS plastic it will al;ways do well.
