Maybe it's just the picture but the obverse toning looks AT.
  • i dont think so. i have alot of ikes and other silver coins with that type of toning. sat in an album for awhile though.

That does nothing for me- bright rainbow colors and bust halves just don't seem like a good combo to me...

Coin was likely dipped white and put in an album. I love bust halves, but that one does nothing for me

    No go for me either.
  • I like it but $1k more than I would have paid.

I normally like toners, but this one seems just "wrong" to me... and I don't just mean the price...

i agree. i have no problems calling this one AT. and somehow i knew
before i looked that it would be AU and not MS. and yes, i do not care
if it sat in an album. or a taco bell napkin. or wrapped in wrapping
    paper with matches. or etc...

the coin just stands out as a sore thumb compared to every bust
coin i have seen. this is taking the color stuff to stupid levels.

Honestly, I think that's an ugly coin. I'm all for toning, but that toning does nothing for me. And the price...forget about it.

    How about this one

i really do not care for that one either but that one is in an OGH,
which is sorta interesting. at least it has not been messed with for
    a decade and some years.

That said, this one I own in a pcgs 30 holder might not be in an "OGH" or "Rainbow."
But it looks like a 200 year old piece (in this grade level) should look like. All, in my worthless opinion.

Those TT coins certainly have been boinked thoroughly and likely repeatedly.

I cannot believe someone would pay $1960 for that Teletrade 1828 common Bust Half.image Something simply does not compute. My first thought was AT. Perhaps the consignor had a moon money $1750 reserve, and some poor soul triggered it. Looks like about a retail $400 coin to me---IF someone really likes the toning.

Good use of the term "boinked"- fits the OP bustie perfectly..

  • Colorful toning on circulated coins is often a bad combination. It simply doesn't look right. Colorful toning may form on the untouched surfaces of an uncirculated coin that has been stored undisturbed (in an album, for example). However, circulated coins generally have their own form of "skin" including grey, pewter and other colors, not to mention oils from handling and circulation. This normal (and in some cases quite attractive) surface condition on circ coins generally prevents (or at least hinders) the kind of oxide/sulfide formation that produces color.

One way to overcome the natural skin on a circulated coin and get colorful toning is of course to dip the coin. If, after dipping, the coin is placed in a suitable album, such as the old cardboard albums that contained enough sulfur to cause sulfidation, then you can get "secondary" toning even on a heavily circulated coin. The Queller halves were a good example of this, many of them having acquired peripheral cerulean toning despite their time in circulation.

I'll take naturally acquired color any day on uncirculated coins with nice mint luster. But for their circulated brethren, I'd prefer that natural "honest wear" look that suits them just fine.

Well, Dizzy, not everybody loves the cleaned retoned look as much as you. The fact that you think it's beautiful is reason enough to run the other way.

No problem whatsoever. There are some who express their adverse opinions with at least a shred of professionalism and insight, and others who do so that simply make most of us image

I think the only one laughing is the new owner of the coin that this thread was created for. He now owns that beautiful coin, and we don't.

I doubt anybody - other than Teletrade - owns that coin. Watch future auctions.
