SEE THE NEW POST HERE!!!
Update 12/31: My Mom is bringing the collection here to the beach house where I've been staying for the past few days!! I can't wait!! Unfortunately there isn't a scale here, so I can't weigh it until I get back on the 3rd and I am posting on my iPhone so no pictures until then, but I'll post a description soon!! Happy New Year, Everyone!!!
Here's the scoop:
My Grandmother was an avid coin collector until she passed away in 1972, and I remember helping her work on her collection 35 years ago when I was a kid. She started collecting in the early 1950s. Well, a number of years ago I recieved her cent and nickel collections (a complete Lincoln set, minus 5 key dates which I know she had, but were not in the collection..... hmmmm, and a complete Jefferson set). There was also a 75% complete Buffalo nickel and a 50% complete IHC collection included, and all were accompanied with rolls and rolls of additional coins in each series, but of a lesser grade. I was happy to have inherited this portion of her collection because it reminded me of her and the good times we used to spend working on it. But.......... I always wondered what happened to the rest of the collection.
Fast forward to about three months ago. My Mom calls and said she was going through some old things and came across a box of "Grandma's old coin collection". She asked me if I wanted it, and of course I said, "Yes"!! I reminded her that I already had the cents and nickels, and she said, "Well, this is a box of all the SILVER"!!!! Needless to say, my jaw dropped and I discretely asked what was in the box (thinking that there probably wasn't much there, considering the cent and nickel collections had been previously pilfered for the coins of value). "There's some dimes, quarters, and half dollars", she said. "Any silver dollars?", I asked..... "Oh, yes", she replied, "Lots of them!" "Oh, and there's also lots of paper money..... some of it looks real old, like Civil War money..... Oh, and here's a bill in an envelope that says 'Save, do not spend'..... Grandma must have gotten that from Grandpa". My Grandfather was the President of the Los Angeles branch of what was back then Security National Bank....
Anyway, then my Mom asked what I wanted to do. She offered to ship the box to me "But it must weigh over 40 pounds". Be Still My Beating Heart!!!!
So I told her, "No...... don't ship it to me, I'll pick it up when I come down to visit right after Christmas".
Needless to say, I'm starting to get pretty excited about my visit!! I'm leaving this Friday the 28th and will be returning on January 3, 2008 with the collection. In the spirit of my, hopefully, good fortune I would like to give away this "Bearded, Garlic-Breath" 1887-P Morgan to the person who comes closest to guessing the weight of the entire collection I'm picking up. Here are the rules:
Guesses will be accepted from now until midnight, Dec. 28th PST. ONE guess per member. All guesses must be made in POUNDS and OUNCES Avoirdupois...... NOT Troy (i.e. 16 ounces to the pound). When I return on January 3rd, I will weigh the entire collection (including any albums, rolls, tubes, bills, and the box it came in, etc.). Everything. Whomever comes closest WINS!! In the event of a tie, the one who posted first will win.
And (fingers crossed), hopefully those key date Lincolns that went missing will be in there, too!!
Good luck and Happy Holidays!
Rick
