It always amazes me the number of coin dealer's websites that don't sell any coins

I just spent about 2 hours going through hundreds of coin dealer websites. It always amazes me how many of the sites don't sell any coins at all, but are strickly set up for buying coins or looking for you to supply the dealer with a want list. With the thousands of coin dealers in this country, you would think that the number of quality websites, carrying choice material for sale, would at least be in the hundreds. From my own experience, the number of decent websites is more in the 40-50 range and if your looking for any classic, older material, it's more like 20-25 sites.

Yes I would agree, you have to wade through pages of garbage just to find something even close to merit buying.

Wow. I have to give you an A for effort!

There are only 6 coin websites I ever look at and mostly it's just to get a feel for what is selling for how much. One does circ type, one does better circ seated, and the others do higher end type.

It may be worth it to supply a 'want list' to some of the sites.... just to see what comes up and the offer prices. Cheers, RickO

I agree. I find it near impossible to find the coins I am looking for on dealer websites. image

I have 6 favorite websites too, that I check on a daily basis. I specialize in Barber and Seated material, so our 6 sites probably overlap. This morning, I had some time to kill and looked at literally hundreds of websites.....turned out to be a big waste of time.

my experience has taught me not to get my hopes up when looking for a dealer to "work" with me either on a want list, at auction or just regularly at shows or through the mail. since the current number of dealers is populated by guys who won't be around as soon as things cool off it's easy to sift through the droves of websites but fun to look around. BTW, i think your estimate is probably close with the 50 number. when you consider that it only takes a server/internet connection, web-page set-up, small inventory and some office space to get things going, i'm amnazed that there aren't more dealer sites. probably the cost of the server is the hinderance.
  • I have done the same thing in the past - trying every single website in an effort to find which dealers offer coins for sale. There are not near as many as I thought there would be. If they only buy coins, it makes me wonder who they sell them to. My conclusion is other dealers which means they are not going to pay me as much as someone who actually sells the coins to collectors. While I do occasionally get nice Barbers from Alpine most of my purchases are from a dealer who has no website and no B&M store.

I'm not trying to spam the forum, but I do offer Bust and Seated silver coins, mostly circulated and rare/scarce dates on my website.

Well when you click on a coin website and there's no link for Coin Inventory, that take's all of 3 seconds.

There are many lists out there of various coin dealer website links. Here's one of many:

I don't know why dealers bother with want lists. Over the years, I've given lists to several and NEVER got a call in response.

    Agreed. I don't even have a website. Heck, I don't even have a camera!

Working in IT (Information Technologies) for the past 10 years, with regards to getting a decent website built, that process is fairly easy.

As far as selling coins on a website, I never said it was easy.....I just thought that with the number of coin dealer's in this country, that percentage wise, there would be many more quality websites than what I see.

It's a ton of work to keep a web site up and running. Adding coins is a 5-6 step process when you count taking pictures, cropping etc. Writing descriptions adds as well.

Then you go to a show and sell a coin off that's listed and have to take it off. more work.

It is a good feeling, however, when a coin does sell and the client is satisfied.

Actually what usually happens to me is that the dealer calls with a coin I am looking for that belongs to someone else that may or may not be cleaned and might be in the grade I'm looking for but priced like it is in PCGS 65 plastic. I get the feeling that dealers consider people with lists are willing to pay more. That being said I do have a want list with a dealer who actually sends me coins from it on a regular basis, very reasonably priced. It must be something I did in another life.

I believe you will find an excellent example of a good site at Northern Nevada Coin. I have used the site successfully and it appears top notch.

  • I run across the one page web sites. Maybe a picture of a coin as the
main focal point, or even a picture of the shop, contact info, list of services,
sometimes a bio of the firm or person. "By Appointment Only" on some.
ANA, PCGS, NGC, PNG and even ICTA logos might displayed. But no category
    listings with inventory.

I usually run into them by accident too. Usually just from clinking on whatever
    from the coinsheetlinks site.

I don't sell coins through my website, but I still get an email every week or two asking me to either sell a coin that is shown on the site or to work a want list.
