Get OFF the edge!

Isn't it time they put a stop to this stupid edge lettering. Only people younger than 40 are going to be able to read the date. Besides we end up with Position A, Position B, Weak edge, Partial edge, No edge and that is for each dollar. Consider there are 16 different President dollars each year, Mint D, Mint P, BS and SF times 4 and when they add the Sac to the mix then it will be even more of a mess.

Currently there are 20 possible varieties for EACH coin. 80 varieties per year times 11 gives you about 880 different potential varieties for the set. That doesn't count the Sac. This madness must end. The Supreme Court is already hearing a case to remove "In God We Trust" from our coinage but the Mint chose to do it on their own.

If you're not on the edge, you're taking up too much room.

All these varieties are little more than a gold mine for the TPGs.

This is not our call... and many collectors like the edge lettering. Ignore the coins if they bother you... others will collect them - including the varieties. Cheers, RickO

    I ignore these coins.
But, edge lettering is what first drew me to bust halves. I remember when I first saw one I thought the edge lettering was the neatest thing thing ever. image
Back then it served a purpose.

It doesn't matter. More chance for errors.

I happen to collect them myself and 80 varieties a year is about to get me to change my mind. And yes, the Mint will listen but only to Congress. If people were to write their Congressperson and complain it would help. Congress is considering this matter or at least they were until they quit for the year.
  • There are over 200 different varieties of 1878 Morgan dollars, so what is wrong with having a bunch of presidential dollar varieties?

FLbuffalohunter reported yesterday that the mint is making the process one step which gets rid of the position designation (they'll all be the same) and eliminates at least 99% of the missing edge lettering errors so your concerns are going away w/o getting rid of edge lettering. Sounds like they've made the financial committment to it and will keep it. as for reading it, you need glasses to read dates on all coins over 50.

Thanks for the update. The coin update, not the reading glasses update. image

<< <i>What brought about the change was a mass production of circulating coins without the legally required mottos and inscriptions. I think it will help the asethtics since the coins should have a more uniform apperance and receive less handling as the Mint is looking to incorporate the edge lettering into the coin stamp operation as a one-step-process instead of the two part it is now. >>

I'd be interested in seeing what FLbuffalohunter's statement is based upon. Hopefully, not second hand speculation such as the "Silver" presidential dollars presented by The Red Book.

I think as long as they are making them anyway why not put the edge lettering. As unattractive as the dollar coins are, to me it is better not to clutter the design with more stuff.

I solved the problem. Just buy one of each mint, variety, etc when the are issued and then you don't have
    to look through any coins!
