1914 D $10 gold inian head

Hi everyone,
My mom just showed me a coin that my stepdad had left her (he passed away in July), and it's a real beauty. I would say MS 65, but I'm relatively new to collecting. I need to get this thing graded and slabbed for her, but I'm unsure which company to go to. Can anyone tell me if PCGS is the answer or should I settle with NGC? Thanks!

Most likely, either would be fine.

If you can, you might want to submit the coin through a dealer, who can evaluate the coin before you submit and let you know if it's really worth being slabbed.

Or you can post a few pics on here and maybe some of these guys can give you an idea if it'll grade. There are a lot of good guys here, with lots of experience.

First, Welcome to these boards, you've come to the right place.

Second, post a picture of the coin and we can give you our opinions.

Third, if you think it will grade, PCGS has a better reputation, so I would send it to them.

  • Thanks guys!
Errrr, I've scanned the coin, but the file is too big to upload. Can anyone give me some advice on this one? I feel like a retard.

Pics ??? I would get other opinions through your local coin dealers before submitting it... Don't want to waste your $$$ on a submission if it gets BB'd.

  • Thanks for the advice. If it were mine, I'd treasure it forever, but my mom would probably rather have the dough -- unfortunately! Can't take them with you when you die, but I'd love for her to pass it down to my son. To each their own --- right?

  • Brought this coin to my local coin shop for advice and he says that it's been cleaned. He says that PCGS probably won't slab this because of the cleaning and that it's basically a lost cause. Should I believe him or get a second opinion? Can anyone give me some advice on this coin? If it's not worth much, maybe I can talk my mom into handing it down to my son. He's only nine months right now, but he's getting my father's collection and mine in the long run. Either way I'd like to tell my mom the truth about the coin. Thanks!

  • It looks about AU-50. I would say it is worth around $350-$400.

IRCW coins is pretty close, bit of wear on the high points of the injuns hair, headdress and face, and the eagles feathers on the rev. Still a neat coin. Welcome to the boards and condolences on your stepdad.

  • hey kartwheel,

welcome to the boards. i am new here too. i have been collecting coins for about 4-5 years. i am 25 with a kid. eberything i collect will be hers one day. its good to meet another newbie. the 1914-d is nice. i see on the jaw a few marks and on the eagles legs. without an in hand inspection, id say ms60-63, depending on the service. PCGS is the way to go with everything i think. the other co. like NGC,ICG,ANACS are good, but will trade for less than the PCGS slabbs. I say grade it. If it comes back body bagged, you learned a relatively cheap lesson. If it gets slabbed, the sale will be that much easier. it doesnt strike me as cleaned from the photo, but in hand is a must. good luck with this coin and have a great holiday season...

That wouldn't be surprising. Unfortunately, a lot of gold has been cleaned. However, that doesn't make it worthless, just worth less.

  • Thank you for the replies and the warm welcome. I've been collecting since my dad passed away last Feb (step dad in july). My father left me a collection that I had no idea he even owned. Apparently he's been collecting all of his life and never shared it with me. It's very unfortunate as I would've LOVED to share this hobby with him. I'm all about it now, and my son will be as well. I don't mean to get off the subject of my original thread, but I have to tell you all that it's so nice to be amoungst others who appreciate this hobby as much as I do. I found people to talk to! Which is a great thing since my hubby thinks I'm crazy. I tell him, "At least I collect coins and not shoes!" Ha! Thanks again

isn't that just melt now days? i would think it would go for slightly

Ten Dollar Indians in 65 are not all that common with exception of the 1926 and 1932. The standard for a 65 is quite tough... I am only mentioning this because there seems to be alot more to this 1914-D than whatever it grades. A belated welcome to coin collecting and ask the questions that others are thinking about.

  • welcome to the forum. here's a 1914d for comparison, it's graded by pcgs as au58.
hard to tell from your scan but yours looks about the same grade. it'd go for 600-700
if you do manage to get it graded imo.

  • Here is a NGC 61. As another member said, MS65 is a rare grade for these, or any older U.S. gold coin. I'd say yours is AU50-55, and scans can be tricky, so I wont guess if its cleaned or not.

Welcome! Your coin is ungradeable from that scan, except to point out that there IS evident wear on the coin which disqualifies it for MS grade. If it is cleaned, it doesn't jump out at you from the scan.

As Russ pointed out, it isn't worthless, just worth less. You might do well by sending a PM to Russ or one of the other dealers here to recommend a sell price, and post it for sale on the BST. That is, if your Mom needs the money right now.

Good luck, and stick around. There is a lot to learn here.

if send it to NGC will get a higher grade by 1pt most likely than if sent it in to PCGS. I got to believe you will be keeping it due to sentimental value and since everyone knows PCGS is the more conservative grader of gold I would hope you would send it in to PCGS.

From the pics the Indian looks AU53-55... But could MS at NGC. image

I don't think either service would MS it as there is lots of luster missing. Figure an AU55/58 at around $550. If your local guy says it's cleaned, it probably is. Even so, still worth around $525.

Whether to slab or not is up to you. Unless the coin can go MS61 or higher, the slab won't get you any extra money. I'd agree that NGC is slightly easier on $10's Indians and that's where I'd go every time.
