What about a T.V. show on Coin Shows?

T.V. has been successful on such shows as Antiques Roadshow, World Series of Poker, History Channel - SS Central America (+ other numismatic related shows), HSN, and car auctions. Do you think the same drama, excitement, action, and suspense could come from a bourse floor and the coin auctions related to it?

I think it could. Have an Antiques Roadshow style format for the bourse floor transactions and dealings. For the auctions, have... (well I've actually never been to one so I can't give any real insight here). There would also be some drama with the police apprehending coin burglars; a large part of recent coin shows. Also, maybe some one - on - one with individuals who purchased coins and reasons why they bought them.

I could see this idea becomming a large PR boost for the hobby (not that it's lacking) and entise more people to numismatics. It could also draw larger crowds to the prime shows, which would be great for dealers and business because people would want to see their face on T.V. Also, auctions could draw a larger presence to the auctions.

I don't see much of a down-fall to this idea, only needing to find a sponsor to get this idea started.

SO, what do yall think of this here idea!!!

  • I believe this to be a great idea/concept.

Hey, we could even get Robert Chambers of the "Coin Valut" to host the show...

  • They don't have enough make up for the dealers to look good.

Hire actors, we all know damn well most of the TV shows have done this in the past.

We examined this and related coin concepts in detail several months ago with representatives from a couple of major cable content providers. After some market studies and other investigation the view was that the numismatic market is too small and specialized to support either a separate channel or programming beyond the present high-volume pump-and-run productions. Margins on most rare coins are too small to pay expenses. Successful concepts, such as imitating “Antiques Road Show,” are limited by the nature of coin collecting. (“Road Show” presents a wide selection of items that could conceivably be found in someone’s attic or at a flea market. Numismatics is equivalent to presenting one antique item over and over.)

The prospective audience is way too small for such a specialized presentation. Cheers, RickO
