USPS Theft Question.

Does anyone here have any idea how much the post office pays out in insurance claims each year? Say for 2006?

Not much unless you call fraud by the reciever theft. They don't lose much. Most insurance claims are fraud.

You may be correct on the fraud by receiver part.. just by reading posts on the forum by people who have bad transactions and get a coin they paid insurance on ( insurance not on package ) and have no problem keeping the coin.... but that aside you just jumped on my last raw nerve here.. I mailed a couple coins to an ebay winner ( closed at about 100.00 worth 200.00 ouch but the price of doing business in an auction format ) Insured the coins for 200.00 and sent them on their merry way.. 2 weeks later I get a email from the buyer he never received the coins, I call the post office tracking and they confirm the lot was mailed and never delivered.. ok I get back to the buyer and refund his paypal payment totally and go to the post office and file a claim for the 200.00 yeah yeah I know the coins were sold for 100.00 but they were worth 200 and insured for 200... In any event it was 23 days from the time of mailing and they told me I couldn't file a claim till 28 days ok the 29th day I file a claim at the local PO and they told me to wait for a response.. 3 weeks later I check at the PO and they say it could take 6 weeks.. OK 6 weeks later I ask again at the local PO and get treated like a SGS slab.. so I decide to take it to the next level and directly get hold of insurance claims from the website and they inform me they never got the claim and to have the local PO resubmit the claim... so now it's back to the local PO and they call the insurance claim division or whatever they call and tell me they will resubmit the claim ( no explaination, no I'm sorry for the inconvience just attitude ) well I just got a letter from the claims division saying they were denying my claim because there was no proof of insurance or no appraisal from a " disinterested 3rd party" with my initial claim the insurance slip was turned in with the paper work along with a page from coin values with the coins highlighted...

now they lost the original package
    they lost the initial claim
they screwed up by not forwarding all the info on the resubmission of the claim
and they deny my claim because they screwed up...

I'm sitting here thinking about putting a disclaimer in my auctions that states liability ends with proof of mailing and insurance papers will be faxed on request.. but what kind of customer service would this be subjecting buyers to this abuse..

wow sorry for the vent.. hahaha the dog and the wife thank you for taking the brunt of my fustration.

I would suggest that you copy this post, and all the info that you just spoke of and send it to the Post Master General- and explain to him the shoddy work of your local PO- odds are it was an employee that stole your items- and that is a federal offense.

It should make everyone here wake up for just a minute- DON"T blame the guy on the other end of your deal all the time as being the ripper- 1st hand experience - not once but twice- with POSTAL EMPLOYEE THIEVES- yep there can be scum in the bucket- each day.

and on a high note- YOU CAN SUE THE FEDERAL GOVT.- I would let my local news know about this as well..

jfoot...."school of hard knocks"... It is required, when you file an eBay related insurance claim, that you print out the auction showing the winning bid, item & purchaser. You are waisting your $$ by having it insured for more than the winning bid. The P.O. will only reimburse you for the actual loss + s/h/i fees. PS Form 1000 is self explanatory as to what is required to file a claim. I've never had a problem with a P.O. claim in 7 years.

Never lost one. in all these years,

Lost only 1 fedex in all these years too. I sent a 20-S St Gaudens to Sil years ago on his fedex account. When the box got there it was empty. The insurance declined the claim saying it was "mysterious disappearance". Sil paid me. Later on it's my understanding that the fedex drivers brother in law was arrested trying to sell the coin at a Baltimore coin shop.

would this be the same form 1000 they lost with the insurance slip and value sheet..
cost of the item is irrevalent if you buy a coin for 100 sent it to PCGS ,insured for the higher value of the grade you expect say 2000 and the coin makes the grade and is lost.. would it be hard knocks when they only gave you 100 for it .. you insure for the replacement value.. if they don't want to pay me the 200 all they had to do was deliver the package ( the service I paid for )

Yes...I can't answer your question regarding you hypothetic PCGS claim, but I would presume, since there was no sale involved, the P.O. will only reimburse PCGS the Fair Market Value of the coin & not the insured value....suggest you contact PCGS & find out.

" sil paid me " that's customer service .. It's my feeling are fedex and the posal service should take the same approach to customer service and them police their own house or take apprioate action to those perpatrating fraud... not make life miserable for the customers.. like our business one bad experience gets rehashed for a lifetime.

btw this is only the 2nd claim I've filed in 20 years ( a lot of really slow deliveries but only 2 no shows )

Love it that the poster quoted had to include "Sil paid me", wouldn't want not to mention that and set a precedent now would we.image >>

What precedent would that be you moron? To force people to sue?

I cancelled Num. News because over a third of the issues never reached the office. Smoebody in the PO likes coins, IMHO.

    I relate a story from a client.

A BIG overnight shipper....BIG..... was having a problem with a lot of "lost" overnights. My client was a district manager of this COMPANY from a far far away town. A Mr. Smith......in Memphis.....ahem..... requested that my client allow himself to be demoted to driver level and be transferred to problem city and "keep an eye out". It turns out that this COMPANY (and I suppose many large companys) had a crime ring that infiltrated the company through NEW HIRES and was very good at "redirecting" shipments by having a shipping label in the palm of their hand and swiping the label over the original label. When a high value, high profile convention was in town----things just got lost through rerouting. The COMPANY figured it out. It's been my experience through the school of Whatsamatta U. that the thieves know who has the high value packages.

My postman takes his break at my office and he watches me as I open USPS value packages. We have discussed PO theft and ----It happens. We can never understand why anybody would want to give up a PO gravytrain.

Maybe someone in your company mailroom collects coins.
