and she is sending it to me........What do you think I will recieve? She lives in Montana.....one of the true Western hard money states, if that makes any difference.
Well, the coin came in the mail today...........Here are the photos. Real or fake? I don't know much about seated dollars, my first impression is not real, but I really have no idea. BTW, she said the date was 1842, but as you can see it's 1846.

I voted for the 3rd choice- but then its coming from a friend of your moms and only the good Lord knows who tried the con game-
I hope its real and in excellent condition.

Hoard the keys.
2 of them had the same die crack on the reverse starting at D and going through STA.
None of them had the 2 die lumps in the shield.
I have no idea if its real or not.
The first thing I would do is weigh the coin....................
Here is an 1846-CC if you need one.

Not a screaming fake, at least. But I have a bad feeling about it.
(Edit to add: 98% chance it's fake, by my odds.)

1. Weigh it.
2. Measure it: Diameter.
3. Drop it on a hard surface from about 2 inches up, you wont hurt it any more than it is already. This will help determine if it is at least silver.
4. Report back the results.
5. If you are more determined to authenticate then send it in to PCGS/NGC.
My first reaction is that it looks real, but without it in hand I obviously cannot say for sure.
edited to say that I did not see the raised dots prior to the comments above. Now I am very suspicious...might be fake.
Whats crazy is that many forum members responding believe this may be real.
