I get them too a bit too often: raw ones worth trivially over melt and really nice and not-so-cheap ones. It is astonishing how long it can take for the stench to dissipate too. In time it will at least. Better than the classic troll doll collection my wife got off of eBay. There was nothing effective in cleaning the crappy smoke smell form them.
Since smokers die sooner than non-smokers one could argue that their collections turn over faster. A rather unfortunate bonus for the non-smokers of the numismatic world.
Anyways, Big Tobacco has made a lot of people a lot of money, so keep lighting up, boys and girls!

Wrong, overweight people are responsible for far more medical costs than smokers. Far more people die from weight conditions. That's the group you should be outraged at. Smokers pay absurdly high taxes for the product which keeps your taxes down on other items, you should thank us.
I agree, it is about courtesy and I act that way around others.
I had dinner in a very nice restaurant last week, non smoking of course.
Along comes a 300+ pound woman who had obviously taken a bath in $2 a gallon perfume. No one around her could even smell their food. Four different tables, including us, asked to be moved elsewhere in the restaurant. Even the waiter's eyes were tearing up. Since it wasn't tobacco smoke, I'm sure many of you would just sit there and have your dinner ruined.
I don't think we're defensive, just disappointed at how far this Carrie Nation movement has gone.

If an obese person sweats on my coin, I'll rant about them too, but that seemed OT for this thread.
Smoking and obesity are two pandemics, each driving huge costs to healthcare.
I'm not supporting the OP out of any political position... I simply think smoking is a nasty and particularly useless and clearly deadly habit. I do, however, fully support smokers right to smoke in thier own homes and cars. At this point, no one can argue about the health hazards. Smoking kills you, the timing may vary, and something else may get you first, but it kills nonetheless.
Like my 9 year old son tells me, smoking makes you stink first, then you die. I'm happy with that answer from him.
Anyhow.... I really prefer my coins come smoke free! I think that is the point of all of this. When they smell, however, the smell goes away, so its not the end of the world.

It's become rare because nobody uses their ashtrays anymore. I know you've seen someone flick a lit cigarette out the window while driving... I don't think smokers are thoughtless slobs. I think some thoughtless slobs happen to smoke and that makes them stand out on a crowd, more so than a thoughtless slob that doesn't smoke. The thread is not that deep though, it's about a preference for coins that don't smell like cigarettes. I can respect that some people enjoy imagining the smokey room atmosphere of a smoke aroma on a coin. It just seems that there's no respect for anyone that doesn't.

We didn't just lose another 90 hospitals in California because of the three people left who still smoke. I just moved to Oregon, where people just rejected prop 50 (another tobacco tax) by 60/40 (and they still have ER rooms). Just because I don't smoke, does not mean I support raiding smokers & "big tobacco" to pay for free healthcare for everyone on the planet.
There's a shop I used to frequent in Southern California where the owner smoked in the store (and I could care less). Don't think I would call it chain smoking, but he had to be having several per day in there. I never noticed the odor on the ANACS, PCGS slabs, & the 2x2's after I brought them home. Also, I didn't stand there and pretend like I was choking to death and say things like "euuw smoking, how disgusting, what a dirty, smelly habit! It's not good for you......wah wah wah". Sorry, I didn't grow up at a time (the 1970's) where we were programmed to have that reaction. Hell, for less than greysheet bid, I would have joined in, even ripped the filter off one of those things. Didn't have to, fortunately.

Reading some posts in this forum reminds me of seeing a movie or a news broadcast about someone who has had terrible things happen to them in their life. You realize how good you really have it and how incredibly dumb some of the human race is. Also its a reminder that some folks will whine about anything or make trivial things seem important. Lordy the human race is 80% pathetic.
You know, those of you defending are really aggressive and defensive about this. The OP only said "Ugh, got another coin set off of eBay today and - phew - the smoke smell permeated everything. I've gotta ask next time if the item is smoke free before I buy..."
I think we can all admit that if you smoke a lot, then things you have in your house and things you mail from your house are going to smell like smoke. Not everyone likes it. No attack was made on smokers... just a statment about the smell of stale smoke.

Not that they would ever accept responsibility for the law of unintended consequences. Not the proud PC deputies.
As an addendum to this thread; I got a call this morning from a brother out of state regarding our older brother and his wife. Seems that as a result of a 911 call, both our older brother and his wife were taken to the ER with breathing difficulties related to being long term smokers. In addition his wife has heart problems and she is in the ICU. The prognosis for the future for both looks iffy at best, therefore it will not be a happee holidaze here or there. Both our father and one uncle were heavy smokers and both passed away from lung cancer. It might be a predetermined cause of death for those family members who still smoke. Dang glad I quit.
Its not my intent to be a preacher, but I would ask that those who choose to continue the pursuit of the weed [and I know from experience that one reason its hard to quit is because its enjoyable] at least have the common courtesy to respect the space of those who don't smoke.
Bajjer - on a related note... I have 2 patients, husband and wife, in their 60s (they look like they're 80+), both on full-time oxygen. Their daughter, also a patient, smokes like a chimney. She had to go outside while her eyes were dilating to have a ciggy - she couldn't be without one for 30 minutes. You'd think she'd know better, but it's a terrible addiction, no question about it.
<< <i>I read somewhere that wrapping a stinky slab with a fabric softener sheet for a couple of days will take away the smell. I never had a reason to try it but it sounds like it should work. >>
I have stuck a sheet in with my coins that I received from a smoker before. Worked rather well after a week or so. They were all brown box Ike's so no big deal.

The known toxins that cigarette manufacturers put in their products are more addicting than any known drug. It's tougher to walk away from cigarettes than it is to break any other addicition.
From street drugs to prescription drugs, coffee to alcohol - even good old Dr.Pepper (notorious for causing Kidney stones) .... NOTHING/ no habit is harder to walk away from than cigarette smoking..... and it is this way because of what is placed IN cigarettes, to purposely "hook" people.
Otherwise rational human beings become powerless Victims as a result of these poisons.
People struggling to breathe, walking around with inhalers (and worse) ... cannot wait to light up another one.
This must be the semi-annual coins and cigarette smoking thread.
I am a non-smoker, despise the smell and effects of smoking, and have come up with strategies that shield me from cigarette smoke 99% of the time, while not further infringing on the right for those who wish to continue smoking. I do feel badly that smokers have become like lepers on our society, but this is balanced by my knowledge of what are the ill effects of smoking. Daily, in my practice, I see lung cancer, head and neck cancer, respiratory failure, emphysema, compression fractures of the spine, peripheral vascular disease ("hardening of the arteries" in the legs making it painful to walk, painful at rest, or in severe cases, gangrene), strokes, and other maladies that can be attributed to smoking. It really is deleterious to one's health and I wish that my coin buddies who do smoke would try to quit, for their own benefit. If they choose not to do so, they are adults and hopefully understand the potential consequences.
As for the scenario in the OP, I have received slabbed coins from a smoking household in the past, and the smell has always dissipated over a short time, without extraordinary measures. Don't fret and don't sweat the small stuff.

It's gotten much worse.
Like the lady in Delaware who complained about her neighbors over a half mile away and almost got them indicted.
Woosified is being kind.
These folks should just have it outlawed and then they can become San Francisco and tax soft drinks for sugar.
Next they will come for your Big Mac or cheeseburger and there will have no one to blame but themselves.
Not that they would ever accept responsibility for the law of unintended consequences. Not the proud PC deputies.

<< <i>I know you've seen someone flick a lit cigarette out the window while driving... >>
Yup, I have seen that. I've seen people that weren't smoking throw non tobacco related trash out their car window a whole lot more though. >>
Really? Wow. I guess that makes it all OK then. >>
You know, you've made some pretty nasty personal attack statements here.
You've used a wide brush without any merit.
By your logic, perhaps some of us could say that anyone who uses a painted coin in their avatar may be trolling for young children.
How does that make you feel?
My brush is no broader than yours and my logic no more faulty, which is to say that neither makes any sense.
You are obviously young and a product of our public school indoctrination program.
When you grow up, hopefully, perhaps you can learn the meaning of respect and civil discourse.
If you can't stand up and respect the rights of others, don't ever expect others to stand alongside you on other issues.
Our rights are being taken away, bit by bit and it's people like you that are driving that train.
Lemme guess, people shouldn't own guns either, right?
I hope you don't have a fireplace in your home and if you do, you know you can never use it. >>
Please show me the wide brush and personal attacks.
Its not my intent to be a preacher, but I would ask that those who choose to continue the pursuit of the weed [and I know from experience that one reason its hard to quit is because its enjoyable] at least have the common courtesy to respect the space of those who don't smoke.
<< <i>I prefer smoke over pet hair, and dont have either in my home. >>
Pet hair is great. Looks like heck on your clothes, aggravates allergies and multiplies the clean up factor but who could not love a face like this?
da ting about dis stuff, you can play 18 holes on it, and den get Stoned to the beJesusbelt on dis stuff man..

Man, that's just downright evil.

Deadhorse, I'm still waiting for you to point out who I personally attacked and what it was that I said to deserve your admonishment. I've reread my posts and I can't find it. Please enlighten me oh mature one.
