I believe the outside of the ring is actually just the rim of the coin. The coin is tapped or hammered on edge, then drilled out to make the hole. Not sure how you could get the design on the outside with that method.

I forget who it is, but there's a guy on eBay that makes the most beautiful Walker Liberty Half rings. The outside edge is incredible.

That video sucks. It showed basically nothing....more time spent on the anvil than the technique to make the ring.
