i do not know how to describe the feeling it gives me but it looks "light" and obviously fake. i never saw a gold coin that looked like that.

    brass?
  • That's actually a pretty decent looking fake.

  • Should be 2.5 times what a double eagle weighs. Roughly since this is .887 and the double eagle is .900

The details on this coin are too squared and precise while originals seem to flow.

I think, although the details and planchet look good, it is a very obvious fake which shouldn't be able to fool too many people.
  • Also, look at her headband and compare to a Real Kellogg! image

That's an old die-struck replica, sufficiently changed from the original to be legal in the pre-Hobby Protection Act (1973) days.

Looks struck from hand engraved dies. Not even close to what the real coin looks like.

I wouldn't even call that a counterfeit. It was clearly not made to deceive anyone and does not imitate the original.

Many varieties of imitation California gold exist – all denominations; round, hexagonal, etc. Dozens more were issued by token makers during the Panama-Pacific International Exposition. When the exposition commemorative coins were planned, treasury officials were unclear about which California pieces were legal tender and which were private bullion – some thought the US Assay Office slugs were US coin and others thought not.

Just check the denomination "Fifty". It's a souvenier shop piece, not a counterfeit.
