Dealers that use True View photos

RYKRYK Posts: 35,798 ✭✭✭✭✭
I am a bit surprised that PCGS has not created a submission track whereby dealers pay an extra $10 or so for their coins to be expeditiously photographed and graded by PCGS, so as to minimize the delay in returning the coin. Many dealers photographs are substandard, and we all know that a flattering photograph can help sell a coin. Heck, a high-quality photo can help sell a bad coin. Because of the Chinese wall between the ops at PCGS and the individual dealer, we would trust that the photograph is accurate and representative of the coin. The buyer of the coin would receive the coin and the photo as a value-added service.

The current impediment is the time lag between the submission and when the photographs get done and the coin returned. If this could be shortened, perhaps more dealers would send coins to PCGS for grading and photography.

Are any dealers currently using True View photos to market coins?

I know that when I sell coins on eBay if you I have TrueViews I realize much better prices than if I don't.

those true-view digi-pics don't ever seem to facilitate forming a opinion of a coin to me

    what dealer is using them?

This is a good point and a possible revenue raiser for PCGS. If I can get the oil changed in my car in 10 minutes, why can't PCGS snap a picture of a coin just as fast? Hopefully they will implement this program, but not before I make a small purchase of their stock. image

Tru Views are really nice to have.. I have one of a trade dollar I purchased....very nice. It would be a selling point for me on other coins. Cheers, RickO

I am not sure I would want them rushing the photo. It takes time to set up each coin for lighting. Also if they get too much business they will have to start hiring people who need training and are not so good at coin photography.

If dealers need help I will take their photos, at least good enough for sale. Leave the nice pretty photography for the collectors who want it the most.

Also Phil's photos often tend to hide flaws bringing out the best in the coin (geared toward a collector who wants to keep the coin). If I were to purchase from a dealer I would want a more revealing pic as to make a better decision.

It's definitelty become an integral part of the business ( imaging).
  • They give credibility, even if they are not the best image in a given listing. Often they are, though. I will use one in a listing if I have one of that coin, but not always as the featured image.

Frankly, the trueview pics give a rather optimistic view of the coin and as such I do not find it a reliable tool to judge the actual appearence of a coin. A dealer using them would, frankly, make me more hesitant to buy a coin from them, not less.

Yeah but in most cases people only get the tiny pics. You have to pay extra for the CD.

I've always received three images from PCGS for the TruView Service. These are small, med, and lg sizes. You can't beat the image quality for the price.

Hmmm, it's been a couple of years since I used them but I always received one size through e-mail and had to pay $20 extra for a cd.

Today, I received an email with three images linked, each a different size.

You may download your photos at the following locations:
    Small: http://www.pcgs.com/TrueView/05023971.jpg
    Medium: http://www.pcgs.com/TrueView/Medium/05023971.jpg
    Large: http://www.pcgs.com/TrueView/Large/05023971.jpg

This is different from what it was a couple years ago, when I last used the service.

I remember talking to Phil about doing this exact thing, I did not realize it was implemented. Good to hear. image

Yes, I use them whenever I am aware the coin has been imaged by PCGS.

Very valid points that, it seems, some people don't seem to think about. Some people just have too much time on their hands and too many questions in their heads image

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

I had over 100 lincolns TrueViewed before I sold my collection. Phil Arnold does incredible work with coins. The only negative thing that I can think of is that anyone can download YOUR photos since they are all posted the same way. If you just subsitute in a different cert # in the above URL's, the photos of the coin will come up for anyone. image

I am not one of those who gets wrapped up with who might use the images of my coins.

I did recently have a dealer scold me via PM and demand that I remove a photo of a coin from his website from my post, accuse me of "stealing" from him, etc., when I only used the photo as an example of a nice coin I saw at a coin show at his table. He had previously given the forum explicit permission to use images from his website. Oh, well...

Nope not there. Mine must be before they started doing this. I will have to ask if Phil can post them.
