My son has 6 Jefferson Liberty Gold (3 BU, 3 Prf). They are in the original mint packaging and dated to qualify for PCGS First Stike designation. The question is, would any of you roll the dice on these 6 in hopes of getting just one Prf or MS 70? That's the only Jefferson Liberty's bringing any money, and that's the only reason he bought them. The bet would be grading and shipping fees for about a $125 and a PCGS membership fee of $50. It's not a lot of money to bet and the payoff is really good....but the odds of hitting just one 70 out of 6 are pretty slim, right?? Can anyone reveal the population reports on the Jeff Liberty's? Thanks a lot for your help!

Are you gonna send them back for a refund if none of them are....

Ewwww. That is just in so poor taste. Recently a forum member started a thread on that very subject, and seemed to be practically "boasting" that he wasnt going to get stuck holding the bag on a PF69. For some reason, that really irked me.

My original post was a legitimate question. Get them graded in hopes of hitting one 70 out of a group of 6 and show a bigger profit......or just sell them as is without any additional costs for a smaller profit.

It's totally up to you.
The grading fee's would be $30 for each coin ($180) plus $10 for each first strike label ($60) plus shipping to and from PCGS ($26.75 from PCGS). Minimum expense = $266.75 not including your shipping fee to PCGS or your membership fee's of $50.
Total approximate per coin cost = $455.41 for the MS and $474.41 for Proof again not including shipping to PCGS or membership fees.
Additionally, since these coins were on a limited order of 1 per household for each offering, could I assume that there were additional costs in acquiring these or did you have relatives order them for you? Those cost should be added to the equation.
The pops on the MS coin is (this includes First Strike):
MS64 = 1
MS65 = 0
MS66 = 0
MS67 = 2
MS68 = 10
MS69 = 1,183
MS70 = 627
Total 1,823
The pops on the Proof coin is (including First Strike):
MS64 = 1
MS65 = 1
MS66 = 2
MS67 = 1
MS68 = 13
MS69 = 1,210
MS70 = 566
Total 1,794
You have close to a 1 in 3 shot in both coins for an MS70. If you get 69's, you'll just about break even if you get 70's you'll show some profit.
The question is, are you collecting these or did you purchase these as an investment?
The name is LEE!
If I was putting together a registry set I would try to make some 70s and would keep 1 if I did get some. I don't like paying the premium for 70s so really the only chance of my getting one is if I make it myself.
If I was putting together a Spouse set I'd pick the best ones and sell the rest as is.
