Who has helped you with your collection?

I think as another year draws to an end that we should thank those that helped us build our collections. While I do a fine job of making my own grades I certainly have had some very amazing people help me with my collections. My problem is that it is way too late for me to list them tonight but I would love to hear from any of you. We can certainly compare notes tomorrow! image

If it were not for Barndog and Mr.Halfdime my collection and understanding/knowledge of the series would be no where near what it is now. I owe great thanks to both of them.
  • I haven't bought too much from any particular people on the boards, but folks like MrEureka and Regulated have helped me develop concepts of what to look for.

Mikie (coingame2000), though in a different year, sold me one of the toughest prooflike Morgans of the entire set. Similarly, a departed forum membress (whom I think I can't mention for fear of poofdom) sold me a few really tough ones for the set as well some years back.

Outside of all that, howards has been very nice to discuss some shield nickel varieties with me this past year. I collected them by variety a long time ago and started back up recently enough. It was surprising to find an avid following had developed for them over the years and howards is top notch on top of them.

A great big thank you goes out to Brian Wagner of Brian Wagner Rare Coins and to Rick Snow of Eagle Eye. Those two brothers have kept ol' curly broke, but very happy. image

Although not all this year, many great names in this hobby have helped me to build a significant reference collection of half dimes, and I am indebted to all of them. I am privileged to include examples from Russell J. Logan, David J. Davis, Ed Price, Stewart P. Witham, Jules Reiver, William A. Harmon, John J. Pittman, Dr. Glenn Peterson, Mark Smith, Stan Kubacki, Alan Bricker, John McCloskey, Mark Sheldon, and many others in my collection, and all but John Pittman were friends and mentors to me in my pursuit. Most recently, I have had the privilege to add some very nice half dimes from both Barndog and Cladiator, who continue the tradition of camaraderie and fellowship in the small fraternity of half dime collectors. I have always held that it is the people, much more than the coins themselves, that make this wonderful hobby what it is.

Aside from the wonderful people here...

my dad, father-in-law and a teacher I had in fourth grade (Ms. Macy) who would give me coins from her travels to other countries.

Thought I'd give this a bump and take the opportunity to thank ColonialCoinUnion and Julian with helping me form my collection over the past few years.

Additionally, I have learned so much - directly and indirectly - from many of the forum members who post regularly. This forum is yet another addictive aspect of this hobby!

Andy Skabalak at Angel Dee's, Bruce Braga and Toby Leach are the most recent who come to mind. But I have made several quantity puchases this year from many others. It's 1:45 am so if I forgot to mention you, I apologize.

Feel free to tear me a new one by PM and I will apologize later this morning.image

  • Well my favorite series is the Sacagawea. There is really only one resource for that. Mike Wallace and Smalldollars

Silver Eagles comes next and strangely enough i've never found a decent resource on line for Silver Eagles.

And the other big helper......The United States Mint.

  • During 2007,Soo many good people here on This Forum have helped me out Alot and for that I am very Greatful. One person That helped me with My Collection was an Old man back in 1956 when i was 8 years Old. He told me a few things about collecting that I've never forgotten. First bit of advice was to buy ONE nice coin with the money you have instead of trying to buy alot of coins at once. The second Thing He Taught me took awhile to understand. He said,we don't really "own" the coins in our collection, but rather we are just their caretakers while we are here on this earth. Then he made me realize, and think about where these very old coins have been long before I came along and where they might be long after i'm gone. That left quite an impression on me as an 8 year old Kid. I just thought I'd share that Story with you all and maybe you can pass it on to the YN's in Your Lives. Ray in Florida..

Tradedollarnut and OKBustChaser are the two forumites that have helped me the most. My uncle is the one who got my dad and i started and helps me the most but he is not on this forum.
