Added mintmark. NGC will back it for that instead of the doctoring I think. I think the 55 DDO might be fake too, but I'm not positive.

I think he might be in kahoots with more than one ebayer, maybe a ripoff cartelle?

Yep. He makes more than enough from ripping off his customers that he can afford full refunds. Because of that, people are less likely to leave non-positive feedback like the buyer I quoted, and people will continue to buy from him because of his decent feedback rating.

Unfortunately, there seems to always be a never-ending supply of bidders who will bid on these doctored coins just because of the toning. For every buyer that calls the seller out, there are ten that do not, making it a very profitable enterprise.

When will people come to their sense about toning? It is, basically, a fad. With the exception of some very knowledgeable collectors, who, early on, began to admire the natural progression of surface degradation due to environmental effects, most 'toners' are new collectors who have been caught up in the fad and pay ridiculously high prices for doctored coins. Make no mistake, the majority are doctored.. and so well, they fool the experts. Too bad really. Cheers, RickO

  • Hi gang. I'm new in town.

I bought a proof coin from topline. When I got it, it didn't look anything like the photo. I figured it was just the lighting he used to take the image. A couple of weeks ago I sent it to be graded. I haven't got the coin back yet but they emailed me and said that it was graded as PR94, surfaces altered. I emailed topline twice but haven't heard anything. I suspect that I won't either. If you haven't figured it out already I'm new at this.

    Any suggestions?

Welcome to the forum. IF you paid by credit card or paypal, do not wait to file your dispute. They usually hope to wait until enough time has past and you can't dispute it. If you do, they will gladly issue a refund to save their feedback rating. But they will not respond until you dispute the claim.

With coins like that a safe assumption is that if it wasn't doctored it would already be in a real TPG holder.

  • I think that Topline auctions normally close with a bid that is too high for quality of coin that is being sold. I bought from him one time and was pleased. I got a problem free 1924-S buffalo nickel in very nice VF for $100, and later sold it to someone who paid $250 for it and was very pleased with it. Occasionally he has some nice coins mixed in, but a whole lot of his stuff looks cleaned or altered. I wouldn't bid too high on most of his stuff if you are going to do business with him.

  • Broadstruck, you got to do something with that 'doublestruck woman' till I am officially off my meds....thats freaking me out, man!! LOL
  • The problem is that I bought the coin last year but didn't send it to PCGS until March/08. Ebay suggested that I file a mail fraud complaint with the USPS, which I did.

Welcome to the forum Bigfish.. sorry to hear you were taken.... Those coins are just examples of advanced - and enhanced - metallic decomposition... some people call it toning. You throw away fruit when that happens, but many people keep coins that are decomposing and even enjoy the rot.. no accounting for taste... image Cheers, RickO
  • No word from topline. I filed a mail fraud complaint with the USPS. Right now I'm trying to decide if I should go on a legal "crusade" and do the lawyer thing. I only got beat for about $900, not to brag but that's really peanuts to me. I've had over 400 transactions on ebay without a problem and I've bought some pretty expensive stuff, original artworks and some awesome guitars. I'm trying to decide if I should be a man of principle, or just forget the whole thing. It may be a coincidence but he stopped listing coins for sale when I informed him of the problem. That's a good thing.
