Saturday morning talk radio programs. Anyone ever do a coin one?

Sitting here watching it snow and listening to Mr. Mechanic followed by a local gardening show and a cooking show. It made me wonder if anyone, any organization or any business has ever done a coin talk program? Local, syndicated or otherwise. image

  • Im sure they have, but more as an infomercial to hawk their overhyped crap and not a show meant to inform people of the joys of our hobby.
  • Call the station and tell em you'd like to do one.

Well, I sure would never be lost for topics. I could just start reading threads and see what happens. image

  • There used to be a show that had "collectibles" as a topic...(mostly sports related) and I also have heard one relating to cigars(which I thought was a bit odd). I have not heard of one dedicated specifically to coins, but I would listen to it! What could be some of the topics that would keep it interesting? Would love to hear suggestions!!!!!

I did and it was pretty neat. I've also been interviewed on eyewitness news Palm Beach a long time ago and that was way cool.

I like the club sponsorship idea, different members could comment, discuss different interests and share their expereince and knowledge about a particular aspect of the hobby or a specific series, etc.. Each week have a different focus. The problem with that is, if your club is like ours, there isn't a lot of energy or interest by the majority of the members to do much of anything any longer. image Plus, then you have the paranoia factor, thinking someone will follow them home from the studio.

Just had another idea, you could do phone interviews with different natinally known "specialists". I don't know what kind of audience you've have, but it would be a lot of fun to do.

I have done many here in the Buffalo area. Probably 20 shows over the years. It's been over 10 years since though....I guess talk radio used to be a heck of a lot more informative than it is now.
  • There used to be one on KMOX here in St. Louis on Saturday mornings for a number of years. Can't remember the host's name. He also had (has?) a column in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. He's there for the collectors mainly. He also talks about stamps quite a bit too. I think he may have a book or two out also....anyone remember his name?

Thanks for all the interesting relpies. It's nice to know it's been done. If someone who has done it, could respond about how long of a program it was, how much time it takes to prepare for it, topic selection, audience interest (# of calls), etc..

    Thanks

I can hear Kent Pavelka on KFAB now.

" It's the Monday morning Coin Geek show. We are here with the owner of Sol's jewelry and loan pawn shop. He just got in a box of coins and ...."

Jules Reiver did one in Wilmington, DE for many years.
PNG member, numismatic dealer since 1965. Operates a retail store, also has exhibited at over 1000 shows.
I firmly believe in numismatics as the world's greatest hobby, but recognize that this is a luxury and without collectors, we can all spend/melt our collections/inventories.
