0 - 70 grading scale

blu62vetteblu62vette Posts: 11,931 ✭✭✭✭✭
Ok I should know this and I know I will get this question this weekend. Why is the scale from 0 to 70? Why not 0 - 100, 1 - 50, etc?

Just curious......

Sheldon made the scale based on his view of the relative values of Large Cents in certain grades. What he thought was an MS-70 had 70x the value of the same variety in Basal State-1.

There is no grade 0. The lowest value is 1.

Many of us ask the same question.

It is an arbitrary set of numbers based on a pseudoscientific grading scale developed by a quack physician and thief. The ANA adopted it after considerable illogical argument by one Virgil Hancrock (sp intentionally) and others.

The “system” is non-linear, has no agreed-to standards and inconsistently, and is deceptively applied by both the honest and dishonest.

I like the scale, it is something that makes sense and is understood by coin collectors.....

69DCAM for the proof coins over the past few year is pretty much a default grade because of the modern product standards. It's likely not worth a great deal more than $60-$70 at this point.

A coin graded by NGC at PF-89 UC? Cool. Would you happen to have an image of the holder you could share? I would have sent you a PM, but you have that option is turned off. Thanks.

A lot of coins get "69s" - must be all the male graders...

"hee hee, hee hee, looks like a 70, hee hee, give it a 69!, hee hee, hee hee, snicker, snicker...."

RWB hit the nail on the head... that being said, it is the only system we have.... It will be interesting to see if there is ever a push to introduce a different grading system.... wow, what turmoil - then the 'comparison' game... "yeah.. the label says a 65 - but in the new system it would grade an 87...".... oh the fun... Cheers, RickO
