  • It's the end of the week, I'm surprised you didnt bump it.

    Well, here you go!

This thread has more bumps in it than the website has cards for sale !
  • another spammer who contributes NOTHING to the forum, but wants free advertising.
  • Wow Boba! That's a lot of hating from someone who has a team in tonight's Super Bowl on the verge of a record undefeated season. You should be in a better mood this weekend. (Nerves, eh?)

If you want a vintage collection as nice as mine, all it takes is will-power. Just do like I do - stop spending on luxuries such as food, heating fuel, gasoline, etc and buy more cards.

I admit my posts are not as dynamic and useful as yours (---I've never started a thread comparing Babe Ruth to a Star Wars character). Nevertheless, I have found that several people are interested in my vintage card collection, as evidenced by the many transactions documented on my site. Also, my web site host reports to me that I had 190 visitors from this board in January alone - so at least a few are enjoying the opportunity to peruse my list of cards and scans.

Thanks for the bump anyway, friend, --- and as the Rev. Rodney King once said, "Can't we all just get along?"

Not accusing anybody of anything, it's probably the scanner that made this card look different. Scan direct from that site, if you go shopping there be careful I guess image

  • jimq112,

By inference, you are making a very serious accusation, so I will respond.

First, I place high quality scans of cards on my website to allow people the opportunity to fully inspect them so there are no surprises when the card arrives. If I were trying to hide something, I could easily crop the picture to hide the fact that this particular card has a poor, wavy cut. Instead, I reveal everything. If something on the reverse side is of note, I include a scan of the reverse side of the card. A review of my site will verify my statement.

Second, the 1949 Bowman set is among those of that generation that is well known for its low quality cuts. The range of cut quality is quite wide for that year. I know first hand from having dealt with the 1949 set for decades.

Thirdly, this card is one that I sold on consignment for another collector in my area. The former owner is an individual with an impecable reputation in the card collecting hobby (if I mentioned his name, most of you would recognize it). If either he or I were so inclined to trim a card (as you infer in your post) do you think that we would have done such a poor job? I assure you that I have a steadier hand than that. It would be simple to cut a 1949 Bowman straight, as the card is so small. The edges on the Robinson card are the same as those on other 1949 Bowman if you look at them under a loop. This card came from the factory with wavy cuts, and it not the only 1949 Bowman that I have seen in this condition.

Finally, the card was listed in GOOD condition on my site. It had heavy ink stains on the front and paper loss on the back. Would there have been any significant financial benefit to trimming the edges to get sharper corners on a card in such condition? Of course not! Poor corners / edges would NOT have downgraded the condition rating of this card. GOOD condition cards are allowed to have worn corners / edges. There was clearly no gain to be had by trimming this card.

Here are a couple of scans to further support the case that the card came from the factory with a wavy cut. It measures accurately for the 1949 Bowman set...

The 1949 Jackie Robinson card was priced fairly based upon its condition and it sold in a matter of weeks after I posted the item. The buyer understood the condition of the card prior to the purchase and determined that it was well worth the $190 to own a 1949 Bowman Robinson with a BV of $950. It's a hot card that typically sells well over book value.

Because of my square dealing with clients and the open way in which I divulge the condition of my cards through high quality scans, I have never received a complaint nor encountered a dissatisfied customers. If I ever find one, I will surely offer them a refund, as my ongoing reputation is certainly far more important to me than a one time sale.

It goes without saying that anyone purchasing raw cards over the internet should exercise caution. Putting out a warning aimed at my site was unfair and unjustified on your part - you and I have never had a single transaction. The next time that you have a question, I request that you contact me directly and get to know me before attempting to publicly skewer me and my reputation by inferring that I may be engaging in one of the worst practices of our hobby.

    Sincerely,
    Christopher Cassidy

  • Blue Devil- I agree with your point about the other board members post but understand that your spamming and lack of useful posts to this board will make you a target. If everyone posted their sites like you do, this would be like the bullitin board at the students center in (name your school here) and no one would bother!
  • M -,

I buy and sell vintage cards on this and other boards. I've set up a nice website to display my cards for sale. I prefer not to trade with strangers, but I am certainly willing to do so with people whom I know and interact with frequently.

I bump this posting no more than twice weekly, sometimes only once. Not daily. Maybe I should be like others who add a new post every time, so that the frequency of their posts is not evident. I try not to clutter the board with numerous posts, but it seems that my strategy of trying to be honest does not work to my advantage.

To say that I don't contribute anything is just wrong. I get 150 - 250 visits to my site each month from the Collectors Universe Forum Message Boards according to my Freewebs site host. Because some participants in this forum may prefer not to buy or sell with me, should hundreds of members each month not get the opportunity to scan my site and interact with me if they wish to?

I understand your point about being a target. But haters will hate for whatever reasons they have. I choose to ignore them in favor of the many with whom I have positive transactions.

Isn't that really what the board is about.

Unlike Ebay auctions where someone might post and then bump it a couple of times your post is a weekly ad for your website. Why not just put a link to your site in your signline and then when you post to another thread it will be there for those who want to go there??
  • Bluedevil- I would take the advice of stingray. You must see that you are the only one who posts a direct "see my website" type post. I'm sure there have been people who go to your site from this board but that does not mean that your posts are in the spirit of what this board is about. This is one of the most secure group of collectors in the hobby so I would not worry about "trading" with strangers.

  • Chris,

I have not been able to get the eBay/Microsoft rebate to work on live.com for the past 4 or 5 days. It worked on July 29, but not since then. Have you had any experience one way or the other?

  • Jerry,

I think that the Live.com offer for eBay was discontinued at the end of July. I had one person take advantage of it when they purchased the Chuck Klein 1934 Goudey pictured above, but that was before the month ended.

  • this guy also spams every craigslist in america. cards typically listed above book. very annoying in general and violates CL rules and guidelines by posting non-locally in deceptive way such that it looks local and re-directing to another URL, another rule break.
    yabbadabbadoo
  • I say don't come to his posts if it bothers you. I see nothing wrong with a guy getting the word out about cards he has for sale.

If you think they are overpriced and his threads are annoying, why would you continue to come here and view them.

Quit your whinning and simplely go away..... End of problem.

I quite enjoy seeing the cards Chris has to offer and has sold. Its all done here in this one thread of his and I see nothing wrong with that.

    Keep the posts coming Chris!
  • Wow, Philip! That attack came a bit out of left field, don't you think? And after I had been so polite in your thread explaining how you could easily identify the tell-tale signs that your Dimaggio Play Ball cards were reprints rather than originals. Go out of your way to help a guy, and he'll kick you for it later, I guess. As they say, no good deed goes unpunished. (And I thought BlueDevil bashing season had finally ended...Oh well)

I think what really annoys you most are not my posts, but rather the fact that I am unwilling to part with the gems of my collection for your low ball offers. Sorry, Phil, but as a matter of principle, I prefer to sell my cards as closes to book value as possible, while maintaining prices below the current BUY IT NOW market that exists online. That is my prerogative, is it not?

bigreddog - Thanks for the encouragement. Most of my fans on the board aren't as vocal with their support, preferring to PM me and purchase cards anonymously. I'm glad you appreciate this apparently (but unintentionally) controversial thread. PS - During the Staubach era I was a big Dallas fan. Stopped following the Cowboys after he retired. Love the '72 Topps Doomsday collection in your signature. It brings me back in time...
