What is this 1877 IHC worth?

This is far above my resources. I tried but I got outbid days ago. What price would you expect this auction to end at? I am interested to know what you would expect to pay for a PCGS AU-53 1877 Indian Head Cent.

Also what is your expert opinion of this cent? I was thinking that it was real nice for a 53 holder. Please help me to see cons of this coin as well.

Thanks for your input.

I purchased a 1877 in the mid 1980's for $650 that was quite a bit nicer than the one you have posted...... so i'm no benchmark.
When I bought mine it was considered an XF and the strike was better.

I would expect his estimate of $4,000 to be met in this auction, that is before you posted it here. I sell AU's in the $4K (AU-50) to $5K (AU-58) range.

Now, please delete the link, and all you people who are looking at it, "Move along, there's nothing to see here"

Well, the previous respondent was the man who "wrote the book" on this IHCs, literally, so there's not much I can add, but I would say it looks about right for the 53 holder, personally. Probably not an upgrade candidate, but solid enough. A handsome coin.

The pics could be bigger and better, but I guess with the seller's loupe/magnification shots they are sufficient- barely.

PS- he has a point- if this is a coin you have your sights set on, you'd better delete that link, or kiss it goodbye.

(Perhaps the cat is already outta the bag, though, since most will guess which venue it's being offered on.)

I used to collect in the late 80's and early 90's as a teenager. I remember looking at all the Keys and thinking about all the hundreds of dollars ($300-$800) it would cost to get them. That was back before I could spend a hundred on a single coin. I have only recently got the bug to look at coins seriously again and now can afford to pay several hundred dollars. The problem is that now all the keys are several thousand a piece. Puts me back in the same boat. Now I have to sell and save to scratch up a few thousand. As they say, hind sight is 20/20!!

As far as my purchasing this coin.... I can't afford it. I was really digging deep for the bid I put on it, only to have that outbid early in the game. I do like the looks of the coin though. So now that it is just a dream I was looking for input for future reference.

The key dates will always be "just out of reach". That's their nature. If they were affordable and everyone could afford one, they would not be considered rare. Nice Stella's will always cost a "House". 1856 Flying Eagle's will always cost a "Car" and 1877 Indian's will always cost a "Family vacation to Europe".

I was joking about deleting the link. I doesn't matter to me. image

Absolutely nothing more I can contribute other than to say this is a very nice piece... that, and ... I'm going to have to wait for the dollar to gain on the Euro so I can afford the "family trip to Europe". I'm only tolling in the VG to F12 range though...Leo

I bought my coin raw so the $650 price had my stomach in knots (got it down from $800 and there was not much in the way of TPG back then), but I really did like the way the coin looked.

I'm not sure how my $650 would compare to todays dollar, but it really doesn't matter..............my ex ran off with my complete set of AU-UNC FE and IHC(minus the '56 and overdates) in a Dansco album.
