It is rather senseless to divide when we all collect US coins in this forum.
It is like getting into a "Which Car is Best" discussion.
Many flavors out there for everyones taste. Some just want to get in your face about your decision. >>
I respect that and your opinion as well but . . . can you tell me you don't jockey between the Registry forum and this one? Are you saying a mouse click or two will undermine the entire PCGS forum experience? Besides, I need a new car in the next 5 or 6 months so what is the best car?!
I don’t want to divide anyone but it is a real bummer to login and hear someone vomiting on something that you have a lot of passion for. I see less bashing on the Ann Coulter political chat. As one of the top collectors of that nasty bullion “crap” I find it hard to have what I collect assailed time after time by idiots that don't have a clue about what they spew.
I think anyone who collects should be proud of what they collect and of their collection because just like no one can live your life, no one’s collection means any more than another’s. The honest truth is I would collect classics if the (I still don’t have a new phrase for them but you know who I am talking about!) weren’t so, okay, as promised I need to leave it at that.
Stooge- I was trying forget about the screwing I took from you BUT you had to bring it up didn't you! I was about to let it go. I haven't changed on my stance though....you DID rip me but good. You came out even...Grandam got a $450 coin for $60...and I LOST about $650 or so!
Full Step Jeffs- I have nothing to apologize for. I haven't said anything that is not true.Modern coins are not rare and ALL dollars after the Peace dollars are butt ugly. This is not just my opinion. Every one I have talked to at club meetings to small shows to large shows all feel the same way about them. I guess I am the only one who has said it out loud here on the forum. 99.99% or MORE of the collecting world hates all the NEW dollars. I have seen bashing of the new Prez dollars here by someone else. I don't even want to waste my time bashing those peices of junk. I swear someone will collect anything the mint puts out! And they haven't done ANYTHING decent in YEARS!!!!!!
Let me try, yes try and explain something to you, now are you listening...
CONDITION CENSUS RARITY
This is a term we use to designate a coin that has millions of them minted, with only a unique few that reach lofty grades such as MS67, MS68, MS69, MS70, and with their rightful designations such as Full Head, Full Bands, Full Steps and Full Bell Lines, etc...
When you say that coins are not rare because they have millions and billions of them minted you sound like a novice coin collecting fool who just doesn't get it. Yes millions and billions have been minted and USED IN COMMERCE! Your 1945 Mercury dime that you say is not rare was made by the tens of millions and 99.999% of them are gone! Only a select few remain in comparison to how many were made. It doesn't matter that there were millions made. That does not detract from the point that out of the millions made (159,130,000 to be exact) that only 3 have made it to MS67FB's...this is why they are called CONDITION CENSUS RARITIES! They are super rare in that grade. So rare that the Joshua II collection still does not have one yet!
What are you trying to prove by letting everyone here know that with all of your so called dimeman knowledge that you are the ONLY ONE not getting it?
Other than this post, I will not be wasting my time with you. I will not be posting in your threads, because frankly, I just feel that you have alot of unimportant things to say
Paul - Don't talk down to me about coins! I know all about condition rarity. I have gone to great lengths about this in other threads. I KNOW that there are LOTS of modern coins that fall into this area. Like I have said many times before, why pay 15K for a 2003-P cent in MS70 when you can get a MS69 for $100 or less! You couldn't tell the difference anyway. To me a 2003-P cent is not rare! There is only one known in MS70, but how many could be out there in rolls or whatever!
Dimeman, I didn't see any reference from Stooge to that stupid thread you posted about being ripped off so why so you automatically bring it up. Every single member agrees that you are wrong and should just let it go. I also agree that it's people like you that make having a separate forum for moderns and bullion a good idea. I don't think we need a "Registry" separation but maybe 2 sub forums under US Coins would be nice.
Maybe we can call it "The No Bigot Forum on US Coins."
<< <i>Griv - it's back a page or so.................and there were several that shared my view! >>
I went back and reread Stooge's posts and once again you are full of it. The only person that shares your view is Hugo Chavez. It is incredable what a thick skull you have. I wonder how big of a jerk you are when it's about something that matters.
Dimeman, I don't have dog in the fight, but you are being pretty childish.
This is a coin forum, not a forum for whining.
I'm sorry you and others have had some bad coin deals. I have been treated unfairly before, but at some point.. even for a loss of $600+, its time to move on.
Ok, now I will take my verbal lickin, if you feel so inclined.
I expect more from grown ups. Now, I feel like I'm trying to correct my grownup children.
At 45, I am just surprised at the crap spewed out on the Registry Forum.
Time for a new thread.
If you want to whine about Bullion, go to the US coin forum OR NOT...
This Forum is for Registry threads not do I like this coin series or not.
Dimeman: If there was a separate forum for modern coins, would you still go there? If not, why then to bother opening threads here that you can clearly see are modern coin related? It makes no sense.
Another thing that is puzzling. Earlier in the year, you mentioned you had a grandson who you were introducing to coins, taking to coin shows and showing him all about the internet Coin forums. So, what would you like to show him now - his grandfather cursing at everyone? Why not edit out all of your cursing, apologize to the entire Registry Forum, and try to start over?

Wondercoin and all others. I am NOT the one who started the name calling and I did not bring up the Stooge deal in this thread...he did! I have moved on from that, BUT have not changed my stance on it one bit!
And by the way this whole thread was a joke in the first place. I wanted to stir up some threads from the classic collectors. I get tired of seeing nothing but modern threads. I don't really care what everyone else collects I just state my opinion on what I think is rare or not.
And I'm sorry, but I just don't understand why anyone would collect bullion in MS70!
Dimeman, No one can understand what makes anothers boat float.
You obviously like dimes. Other don't.
Granted bullion in MS70 and PF70 takes someone different than a diehard classic collector to enjoy. Just live and let live.
The bonus to a classic coin collector like yourself is that it brings interest to the hobby by them collecting anything, including the new stuff the mint does every single year.
<< <i>Stooge, you and Griv are two of the BIGGIST A$$HOLES I have ever seen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! >>
Are saying Stooge and I are equal aholes? I don't think so! I'm a far bigger ahole than Stooge can ever hope to be. He doesn't have the training or the stomach to be a true ahole and I resent your insinuation! Clearly he has some potential mind you, but he would have to really work at it. Check the stats next time before you go off on something you know nothing about.
So this what it's all about Stooge. You couldn't wait could you? You know quite well that my ahole days are numbered. So, you had to try and be a bigger ahole than me, and for what? For fame, for fortune? I hope you are proud of yourself. Thank God that I still have Dim_man to keep me on my toes but you wait Stooge, I'm not done yet!
<< <i>But it is what it is........moderns are ugly and are NOT rare!!!!!! >>
Okay, put your capabilities to the test...
Please locate in spare change the following Jefferson Nickel dates in Mint State 65 Full Steps... all must be PCGS certified by you within the next 6 months:
The truth is, all those designations; FB, FBL, FH and Full Steps are basically for beginner collectors! Because the simple fact is, there has been an onslaught number of understruck coins that have received these attributes and registry collectors have spent moon money on them only to pad their GPA. The infamous 1960-D MS64FS was a perfect example of that. It didn't have full steps and it wasn't a fully struck coin! Sadly, there are a boat load of those coins in most of the registry sets and those collectors could care less about them. Yes, many of those coins that went for moon maney are butt ugly. For the above dates, their condition rarity are extremely rare if they are located with Full Relief (FR) (And yes, I'm pushing for that designation) strikes and 4-6 steps and not based on their steps, bands, heads and bell lines alone.
Leo
And Merry Christmas!
The more qualities observed in a coin, the more desirable that coin becomes!
The infamous 1960-D MS64FS was a perfect example of that. It didn't have full steps and it wasn't a fully struck coin! Sadly, there are a boat load of those coins in most of the registry sets and those collectors could care less about them.
On the contrary, many collectors care very much. JHF didn't bid on the 60-D "Unique" nickel when it was auctioned off despite those (incorrect) claims at the time that the coin was a "true" FS (and it was the only coin stopping anyone from having a "perfect" set of FS pieces - didn't matter to JHF or other top collectors). Frank didn't bid either. Larry didn't bid either, and so on. In fact, the top collectors avoided it entirely as the coin was not "the real deal". Even when it was auctioned off the 2nd time - none of the top collectors would even bid $10,000 on the "$32,000" (previous sales price) coin, so JHF bought it to take it off the market, which thankfuly PCGS did.
That said - where I do agree with you entirely is that every serious collector who plans to put serious money down on FS nickels had better know what he is doing as there are a great deal of marginal to crap coins out there in every company holder. Either lot view the coins personally if your skill level is advanced or hire a specialized dealer to represent you - it may save you a TON of money in the long run. Meanwhile, learn as much as you can before you spend any money on this series.

I'm as aware of those collectors as you are that include a host of others but this does not make my claim any less important as there was then and still are many raw bidders out there with these novice attributes.
That said - where I do agree with you entirely is that every serious collector who plans to put serious money down on FS nickels had better know what he is doing as there are a great deal of marginal to crap coins out there in every company holder.
Very true! But that doesn't say that those same collectors don't have a great deal of lateral upgrading to do for 20 to 40 coins to improve their collections.

i'm not nearly as hung up on fully struck pieces as leo. i'd be happy to nail down a medium struck GEM example of any of the dates listed above as well as 52-p, 53-ps, 54-ds,55-d and some others. 5 clean steps would fit nicely in my set.

Thanks but I can't take all the credit. Being apart of, perhaps one of the highest quality 1938 to 1970 Jefferson nickel collections ever assembled, locating many of those dates like you said, would be a blessing to alot of collectors including many top registry sets!

Point taken.
This is the PCGS Registry Forum.
As far as I am concerned this is crazy to divide the Registry Forum.
The registry has it all, including medals and foreign coins.
If PCGS were to form a
US Classic Coin Forum
&
US Modern Coin Forum
Instead of the US Coin Forum, then that would be fine with me.
Has someone asked PCGS to do this in the past?
