Large Cent Help

Picked both of these up for $8 a piece, so feel free to be as frank as you wish.

Is the die crack running from 3 o'clock to 6 o'clock on the reverse anything special here?

Any way to get off all the green stuff?

thanks for your help.

Post these over on the Medal Detecting Forum. A bunch of them know what to do with old corroded Copper.

Oh yeah, if you want to make a $4 on that '98, let me know. image and I'll even pay shipping!image

You want to double your money for the 1798?

And I don't know about the die crack/ die state for the 1798 nor how to remove the green from the 1817.

Yup, S-186 R-2, no premium involved, but I'll take it for $16 image
  • I need to check my book but I think its a S-186
  • Dip them for like twenty four hours, and if that does not work use a very fine gauge steel wool to bring out what beauty is left in them.

To be honest I don't think you can do much with them too much damage already there.

Is that worth anything over a normal piece?

Definitely an S-186. Its an R.2 - no real extra money in it... Still has a pretty cool crack.

  • I love the crack. Here is a somewhat better photo of it from HA.

  • Can't go wong for $8 - even with the problems. The 1798 is an S-186 ( as already alluded to) The die crack is diagnostic and always found on the reverse of the variety. The coin has some major issuses with pitting and corrosion/verdigris, but really pretty decent hair detail. Don't have my Middle Date reference handy, so can't comment on the Newcomb variety at the moment. The coin has got a lot of verdigris. You won't be able to fix these problems so you could leave as is or soak'em.

Any 18th century Federal issue coin with a full date is a super buy at $8! Congratulations!
