When Does Toning Fall into the Realm Of Environmental Damage?

When it in negative on eye appeal? When it looks like the coin is being eaten alive?

Probably... and not definitely.. when it is completely black... I have never dipped one that far along... .. at least as far as 'natural' toning goes... AT may cause significant damage... depending on the method. Verdigris or PVC will certainly show environmental damage. All depends on the active agent, time, concentration etc... Cheers, RickO

i will guess when the details/fields are being ruined or obscured.
think of a coin that has been dug up.... that is damaged.

a coin that is jet black should show all the details and fields nicely
    with proper viewing.

When it is ugly, mostly, but many deeply toned items where you are unable to see the rotating lustre may very well fit into this category.

It falls in the realm of ED when someone else owns it. If I own it, the coin has character. image

uggh - got back my grades today from a submission. I had a nice toned Sesquicentential half that came back "Genuine Environmental Damage". I will post the pics later but IMHO - Environmental Damage is a slap in the face.

And is Environmental Damage any different than toned? except for the degree of it? Another way of saying it is : Isnt all toning damage of some sort to a pristine coin.?

  • PCGS bagged these for "Environmental Damage"

The obverse of one is dark but all have full luster and no sign of corrosion...

I did not submit the coins originally but purchased them in there body bags so to speak...

    When "toned" like this...

Even this one was bodybagged... out of similar "toned" proof set.

Never. Natural toning is a natural process. In my mind this never becomes environmental damage, unless some other process comes into play. Whether or not PCGS feels the same way is another story. AT on the other hand or exposure to chemicals that caused unnatural levels of toning, perhaps that could be considered environmental damage.

The difference is "environmental damage" vs. AT... when the packaging/storage is faulty, the toning can take on a very deep, crusty-like surface which is different than toning which is a very thin layer of oxidation.
