How Long Will It Take For The 10th Anniversary Platinum Eagle Set To Sell Out

With the success of last years gold and silver Reverse Proof 20th anniversary sets, I think they will sell 15,000 - 20,000 sets in the first week and the maximum mintage of 30,000 sets will sellout by the end of the year.

link to the set. Ordering starts at Noon EST today with a one per household limit.

I'd be surprised if they sell out. They're certainly not rarities or even come close to low mintage, much closer to high mintage.

  • I'd be surprised to see 30,000 units sold. I don't think they made that many... I suspect that sales will be cut short sometime in the near future. Final sales somewhere near 7-10k.

With a mintage limit of 30,000 this set is dead on arrival.

They won't sell out but they will be sold what's on hand which maybe less than 30k for a long time. I didn't see where this fit into the poll so I didn't vote.

I checked their website to see costs and mabens offer to buy for $2100

restricted to 1 per household for first week, and then mint will reassess - $1949 buy price

I do not think there are enough households that care or have $2K sitting around for a quick(maybe) $100 to sell out in first day (starts selling in 45 minutes?)

I think they will not sell out in a week - if they reopen to any amount - some big dealers/speculators may gobble them up and hit the 30,000 mint max

I believe the Mint will have to back up its word. When the Mint said that 30,000 sets will be available, it can't just close the program after selling 12,000 sets.

My guess is the final number will be above 20,000 sets.

There are a lot of smart millionaires. Anyone smart enough to make a million, certainly knows how to make a few hundy. Eric, I think these will sell out.

Remember the bi-metallic coin from 2000 ? The reverse proof from last year ?
Think about how many people there are collecting bullion. When they find out how much can be made off of "certain" coins, don't you think they'll jump ? I do !
  • It all depends on how much they limit after the first week. If the tv shows and dealers are able to gobble them up in a week then thet will sell out by Christmas.

  • How many 1995-W 10th Anniversary Gold and Silver Sets were there? 35,000? They ddn't sell out and people complained about the price then also.

    You never can tell.

I think they will stop sales on 1/1/08. The 30,000 is to say anyone who wants one can get one.

They might, but I'd be surprised... On the other hand, I've been wrong before image

Watching order numbers might provide some insights, but I suspect there is also a "last minute rush" on the commems and legacy sets between now and tomorrow when they cut off sales, thus confounding the rise in order numbers.

Order numbers are only good for the first day. Obviously anything under 30,000 is no sell out, if you get 40K or 50K, then maybe.

I think they already have 30,000 on hand.

points... if they let people have 10 then dealers would be able to buy enough of them to promote them.... without promotion the set dies... however the mint can create something by cutting em off... which would be smart because then John Public will get hopped up to buy the next offer..... if only 6,000 sell and they cut them the price would rise quite a bit....

Well if we start getting backorder notices on the first day that should give a clue of how many sets are on hand. They won't mint a 2007 set past the end of this year.

    30,000 pieces + 1 per household = it'll take a while.

It uses as much of the Mint's server resources to place an order for one as it does an order for 100. So I'm not sure using response times and server loads relative to past offerings will be accurate here.
  • BECOKABECOKA Posts: 16,961 ✭✭✭
Took about 15 minutes to order but it is done. The website started to get pretty fast toward the end which makes me think the rush is over. image
  • RarityRarity Posts: 1,436 ✭✭✭✭
I just finished placing my order but the order status is saying: "Your order request has been suspended" and no cancel box is shown at the bottom of the order page.

Is the Mint rejecting my order ?

That's normal. They do that in case you place a double order by mistake. It will change to 'on hold' in a few minutes.

That didn't take long, the Mint site is back to normal. I would say there wasn't much interest in the offering.

actually this one was dead on the drawing board image

Anyone notice the US Mint ads on TV lately? Lots of new non-collector buyers are in the Mint ordering frenzy now. They don't neccessarily know what they're doing by ordering.

.... but then neither do I .... image
  • As the 1st day of sales comes to a close with no sellout recorded, I'm removing that option from the poll. These are the totals so far.

Please post and tell us how your celebratory run went. Did the thought of modern platinums make you push yourself harder? Did you find any dirty coins along the route? Were you reciting the Hippocatic oath in your thoughts as you ran? Inquiring minds want to know. image

This makes 45,000 orders since the sets went on sale. Of course, a lot of orders were for other items, some of which went off sale on Dec 14th.

...that may be...but he must be off Christmas shopping or something this weekend - the site still refers to 12/14 as "Tomorrow" being the last day to buy commemorative coins...

  • So if they don't sell out in less than a month, I'm guessing they will have LOTS of returned or cancelled orders. Many buying hoping they sell out and can make a quick buck, although I'd be inclined to keep 1 set just for my collection. I have mostly gold, but a nice reverse proof platinum set would sure be my show piece.
