10th Anniversary Platinum set PCGS certification info.

I just got off the phone with PCGS customer service and was told that there would not be any special 10th anniversary certification for these platinum Eagle sets. I was told that PCGS will certify the reverse proof "first strike", however.

That seems odd since they did have a 10th anniversary platinum label last year. I would wait until it is officially posted.

If that were true, there would be no point in sending an unopened box to PCGS. One could just send in the enhanced reverse proof platinum coin within the first 30 days and get the "first strike" designation without the 10th Anniversary designation. I fail to understand or believe PCGS would not stay competitve with NGC on this issue. I say, don't be too hasty. PCGS will more than likely come around. They did so last year with the 20th Anniversary Gold last year by posting the rules after the sets were received by some. This upset quite a few collectors/flippers at the time.

Yes, and it would be fun to have two years in a row, each with "10th Anniversary" on them.

My rep simply said nothing was in the works at this moment.

I cannot believe they won't have a special designation....NO WAY!!

I believe PCGS does not want to hassle with sealed boxes - hence, the rule.

It will also keep the "junk" regular Proof coin as "junk". IMHO, far less value to the set this way as compared to "what could have been".

If I end up getting any, I will send them to NGC for the 10th Ann label. Maybe they want my business if PCGS doesn't. If PCGS isn't going to label them 10th Anniversary because they decided to come up with their own "10th Anniversary" coin, that is their fault.

As stated in another thread I wouldn't cringe if they added a small fee maybe $50 for the hassle of dealing with sealed sets.

BTW - I am not questioning the decision makers on this, BUT, I truly believe (and still do that) the approach I suggested to Ron Guth last year, which was adopted by Ron for 20th Anniv Gold / Silver sets at PCGS was "da bomb"! It resulted in the PCGS 20th Anniv coins having far more value for top quality sets. It made otherwise "boring" coins such as the regular DCAM gold coin or MS Silver Eagle real "winners" in top grade 20th Anniv First Strike holders.

Oh - what could have been with these regular issue DCAM $50 plats from this set......

I guess we can all assume anyway that it is a 10th Anniversary version anyway. I guess we don't need a label for that.

A NO BRAINER Missed Again at PCGS and Seized Upon by NGC

It's like saying "Go ahead and take a $500 Hit on us, Folks!"

You would have to be a complete idiot to relegate 1/2 of a special issue to melt or less for the privlege of a PCGS FS RP!

The whole game with having to send unopened boxes in has made this whole process a joke.

What if the mint sends you damaged or sub-standard coins? You have no way of inspecting them before you submit your coins at premium grading levels at even higher prices because you pay for the designation as well.
  • pf70collectorpf70collector Posts: 6,673 ✭✭✭
I agree its a crapshoot. But If they decide to offer the label on both coins than I am in. If not I will sit this out for a while and decide what I want to to. Maybe a raw set wouldn't be so bad uncertified.

i tend to disagree w/ sending to NGC

the gold reverse in PCGS FS PR70 is worth how much over melt? (sarcasm)...about TWICE what one plat is selling from the mint. yes i know that only 10k were minted and peolpe could get ten sets...but still the demand is very high for this gold reverse.

it's really the ONLY way to make big money on buying this set, IMHO.

i think the return $ in going to PCGS just with the (enhanced) reverse after a close visual inspection will far outweigh an NGC 70/70 set..and god forbid a 69/69...

i'd rather return a set than go in blind just to get a designation on a proof coin from NGC.

i hope i do not have to eat my words...
