Does anyone here regularly purchase Ebay items from foreign sellers?

I was taking a look through a particular numismatic category on Ebay, and it seems like there were a lot of foreign sellers of the items. Some of the countries are France, Hungary, and Uruguay.

Does anyone here regularly buy from foreign sellers on Ebay? If so, what have your experiences been like?

I have had success with UK sellers, too. Also, Canada.

I bought some British Modern Crap like Britannia coins and UK proof sets from sellers in England, at least until the dollar really started to tank and it because too expensive to do so in dollars. Haven't had a problem...mostly.

In January, I bought a four-piece 1997 silver Britannia proof set from a UK seller. A month passed and still no coins. I asked him about it and he suspected a Royal Mail screw up or an issue with the "handoff" to USPS since there was no record of USPS delivery. About six weeks after I bought it, in February, he issued a PayPal refund to me. I thought that was the end of it.

Well, in May I received an unexpected package from the UK...postmarked January 9. I opened it, and sure enough, it was the set that the seller sent. I sent him a note notifying him that I received it and that he could invoice me again for the coins. He sent it and I paid it, and that was that. The lousy thing is that it cost me an extra $10 in U.S. dollars because of the declining greenback. Given his gratitude about my honesty, I probably could have agitated to get 5 UKP off the price to account for the change in exchange rates, but I didn't feel like being a jerk, and given the rise in value of that set in the interim, I just paid it.

I just bought a gorgeous 1795, draped bust, silver dollar from a seller in China. I was able to attribute it from Cardinal's website as a common variety. I grade it XF-40 and looks great. It was very expensive ($80.00), but I'm very happy with it. The seller was recommended from our own Russ. I don't normally buy bust dollars from China, but when they look that nice, I sometimes go for it.

  • I bought a pcgs ms65 ike dollar from a canadian on ebay. He sent me a raw well circulated coin. Then he said to send it back and he would refund my money. I sent it back and that was the last I heard of him. Ebay did nothing.

I learned my lesson. Buy American!

I can't say regularly, but I have bought from UK, France, Italy, Germany, Austria, and Belgium. There may have been one or two others that I am missing. Never a problem. In fact, I know have some great contacts in those countries that keep an eye out for me on stuff I am interested in.

Most of my German coins are from German sellers. Postage is somewhat higher compared to the US, but I've never had a problem. The ones that I deal with accept PayPal.

One time from a German dude. I got a good deal and was happy.

As a rule, I shy away from them and never from Chinese.

  • I've bought Peruvian coins from Peru and Argentina. The seller had good feedback from buyers in the USA, so I figured I was OK. The only problem is the wait...... mail takes a while to come from South America.

Yes, I purchase 80% of my coins from British and German sellers. In my opinion, the descriptions are fair, shipping inexpensive and good communication.

and also on the grading side, when you hear a reputable British seller say that the coin in question is XF, I've come to expect it will grade MS63-65 at PCGS or NGC. They are generally much more conservative when it comes to grading than most Americans.

I've purchased from sellers in the U.K. and Canada without incident in the past. A couple of weeks ago I let myself get scared off a really nice AU Texas commem half (they're hard to find in appealing CircCam™ condition) because the seller was in the Philippines, I never bid and it went for a very fair price.
