A lesson to you eBay sellers

I was about to file a PayPal dispute and NEG a seller. Why? Read on.

The facts.
I bought a coin book on 11-03-07
Cost: $49.90 + $8 shipping. I also paid the extra $1.30 for insurance.

On 11-26-07 I emailed the seller this...
"Hi I bought the book (name deleted) from you 3 weeks ago and I have not received it yet. Please send me the delivery conformation number so I can track the shipment.
Thank You."

His reply on 11-30-07
"Your book has shipped. I will get your postal tracking number from my supplier and send it to you. "

After not hearing from him I emailed again on 12-05-07
"This auction ended and payment with insurance was tendered over 30 days ago, but I have received neither item nor the delivery confirmation number I requested on November 26. Accordingly, please refund my full payment tendered of $59.20 by close of business this Friday, December 7, 2007. I will then consider this transaction satisfactorily concluded. Thank you."

Today 12-10-07 I finally get the book.

He shipped it via Priority Mail on 12-01-07 for $4.60

Note to sellers
We know when you're lying.
If this guy would have just told me after I emailed him on 11-26 that he overlooked my shipment and its on its way via Priority Mail, everything would have been fine.
But what happened here.
He replied 4 days later with a vague answer with NO FOLLOW-UP (a shipment number).

SILENCE allows the mind to wonder. That brings in your imagination. And people always imagine the worst case scenario!
SILENCE is your enemy! Avoid it at ALL cost.

Ok, flame away I can take it.

I agree with you. I'd still neg him too.

Maybe he really did ship the book to you, and upon checking with his supplier, it was determined that the package was lost. Rather than make you wait for the claims process between the supplier and he, the seller placed a subsequent copy in the mail for you.

That "from my supplier" BS always cracks me up.

Doesnt that seem way to slow for priority? Communication is not the strongpoint of some sellers. I have been looking for an item and send off a few questions everyday. Very few give a response so I move on to the next. I do find the Ebay communication to be one of the hardest things to adjust to.

there's a certain numismatic book seller on ebay that has decent prices, $8 shipping, and relatively lousy feedback...wonder if it is the same one.

Transit times are slower this time of year.

Then why not email me that?

Don't get me wrong folks. I consider this transaction complete and will give a positive feedback, but I'll post the slow shipping at risking my %100 positive feedback.

Exactly Russ. He was selling 2 of these books via BIN.

I cringe when I place a bid on ebay these days. Here is the main reason why. As a detective I work a TON, and I mean a TON, of fraud cases. I don't get as many these days being assigned to investigate gang related cases, but I have recently started seeing our local street thugs (aka gang bangers) becoming more computer literate and thus abusing sites like EBAY. I try to stick with the same people when buying on ebay but being somewhat new to the coin realm I have to find ones with a ton of positive feedback. I would suggest that everyone that sells on ebay post their names, and a link to their feedback, so that the rest of us can add them as favorite sellers. Just a thought.
Mine is ASUTodd. I don;t really do a lot of selling but you never know, atlest you will know if I bid on your item I will pay you promptly via paypal. Thanks.

I shipped a package back in April (I think) from my location to another location within my state and it took a week or so. I could have driven there, dropped it off, and been back in the same day. Of couse, gas would have cost me $50.00 or so, too. So, for $4.65, I put up with it. But, yeah, I was very worried after the week was gone.
  • Last month I bought a CD from a guy in Southern Calif. for my wife. Our Ebay account is in her name so when I emailed the guy about the cd not arriving in 2 weeks I got a very terse reply. I think he thought he was dealing with my wife so when I emailed him again and used my name I got a lot better response.
All it takes is a couple of minutes to communicate with your buyers to keep most everyone happy.
Let them know when you got paid, when item was shipped and a quick thank you.

He does not deserve positive feedback. I would leave a neg or no feedback, the neg being for bold-faced lying.

image Most people on this board do not need a "lesson" on appropriate selling to others. People here know what they are doing and any newcomers just have to follow the practices of the more experienced sellers. Do some research on past threads and you will see this is the case.....
  • FWIW, buyers (in general) are no better at communicating than sellers. Every end-of-auction email I send out includes the buyer's address as supplied by eBay, with a request to confirm that it is accurate. Less than 10% of the people I send this notice to respond to my request. On top of that, every week, at least one of the buyers who pay through PayPal have on file there a different address than the one they have on file with eBay.

Please! How many eBay problem threads have you seen here?
Almost everyone of those problems could have been solved with better (and proper!) communication.

Good advice! Here's a link to another thread where the members of the U.S. Coin Forum here provided excellent eBay advice to yours truly some time ago: Link to eBay Advice on communication
