Average number of cleaned coins being sold on ebay?

I have been buying raw Morgan and Peace dollars on ebay looking for VAM's, mostly circulated coins and have been averaging about 75% cleaned. The cleaning has not been mentioned in the auctions, but I am not sure how many raw coin sellers know if a coin they are selling a coin that has been cleaned. Is this about normal for buying raw coins on ebay?

Do you conisider "dipped coins" as cleaned? If so, I would agree with your percentage. I'm sure a good percentage of common date dipped coins are also in TPG holders.

I was not considering dipped coins, but only coins that would not get into TPG holders.

If that is the case ... wow ... you've been buying from the wrong sellers...

If you don't count dipped I would think (perhaps "hope") it's sub 50%. Although.....

It's not only a problem for raw coins.
Almost every NNC slabbed coin on ebay looks cleaned to me.

My luck with real AU early date mercs is very poor. 75% is conservative with them.

One source I cherry raw from somewhat regularly has a common mix of cleaned and problem-free. About half of them are ok to get holdered. Usually common dates at the slight premium to melt. The cleaned ones are usually obvious enough too. Can't say the same for many others, raw or in other holders.

My problem is I am not very good at being able to tell if a coin is cleaned from the auction photo's. Here is an example that I recently received and I am pretty sure it has been cleaned since it has so many marks and no toning, yet from the photo I wasn't sure.Auction Link

You can bet your sweet pippy that his coins are cleaned...You need to check the sellers feedback before you start buying. Toolhous.org is a place to start.... Link

I have recently aquired a rather large coin collection that was partial payment to a lawyer who handled a large estate sale. These coins are stunning, many would grade very high if certified. Morgan Silver Dollars in grades such as MS66, MS67 and MS68 are worth thousands of dollars. I am not a professional grader so decide for yourself on the grade, but I can assure you this is a very nice coin. Coin has some tape glue on the reverse.

lol..coins are stunning, 66,67 68's are worth thousands, this coin is very nice, oh btw it has some tape glue on the reverse!

If my failure rate on cleaned coins were that high, I'd find a reputable dealer.

OPA... That Toolhous.org looks like a good place to check a sellers ratings, but when I put in a seller ID, it only gave totals and didn't separate the ratings like in the link you gave me.

it depends on size and age

I would imagine over 50% of the raw bust halves are cleaned

but less than 5% of 2000 Roosevelt dimes

pictures and scans are deceiving, but there are so many available on eBay, if anything does not look right then just pass
