Old label .vrs. new label PCGS
Why do alot of people say early on that the old pcgs labels typed print were undergraded?, and if those same coins graded now, they would be a grade higher, are thier standards any lower now than before?

Grading is subgective and not all older slab coins will grade higher, you still have to buy the coin not the slab!

Marketing buzz so dealers can charge higher prices. Actually PL and DMPL standards for morgans are tougher now than before. But if PGCS came out tomorrow with pink labels, dealers would claim all the current blue ones were undergraded. As usual, look at the coin, not the holder.

PCGS denies standards have changed, and I agree with that. What changes is human nature and yesterday's 64 becomes tomorrows 63 or 65.

<< <i>I would say that PCGS has stuck with their grading standards from the begining, and some like NGC and ANACS over the years became slightly forgiving. >>

Fresh groups of old holdered coins are still like hitting the jackpot.
If you have first hand knowledge of such coins, it would be quite possible for 50-90% of those coins to upgrade. If the original buyer knew something about grading or was fussy, you can bet that most of those have some upgrade potential....esp if bought back in the 1986-1992 time frame. Old holders from the mid-90's offer far less potential.
One can find undergrades just by being the first one to look at coins just returning from the TPG's. This is just as good as finding fresh old holdered coins considering that 5-20% (on average) of what gets sent in will be undergraded. In some cases I have seen entire submissions undergraded that once returned, all went up 1 pt on average. It happens.

My comment:
Beware when you hear that the older PCGS slabs is marketing buzz so that dealers can charge higher prices.
The reality is that collectors such as myself, roadrunner are constantly on the prowl willing to pay higher prices for the older PCGS labeled slabs because they are much more often PQ or even undergraded for the assigned grade.
I have done numerous studies in which I put an equal number of old PCGS slabs side by side to the newer PCGS blue labeled slabs.
Need I tell you which group collectors over 90% of the time look at first and at ALL of them?
This is NOT to say that once in a while you won't get a great PQ or even undergraded coin in the newest PCGS holder.
wasn't specific and neither was my answer.
""As usual, look at the coin, not the holder"" was my entire point.

If you get lucky and find an upgrade candidate buy it.
