    While detecting? Nope, not me.

I know of plenty of folks who've found paper money in old tobacco tins and cans and stuff like that, up in the rafter of houses and such. And I am sure they occasionally turn up from the ground. But not to me.

Of course, I have occasionally found paper money blowing along the street, but who hasn't.

  • While I didn't see it first hand, my sister and her husband made a find at their house that would fit into this category. My brother in law was building onto the back porch of his house and noticed a jar in the ground. He cleaned off the outside of it and didn't even bother opening the jar to look inside. He took it inside and placed it up on top of the microwave to look at later. Somehow, the jar was knocked off behind the microwave and stayed there for a week or so until my sister was cleaning the kitchen. She pulled out the microwave and noticed the jar behind. She took the lid off and reached inside to find a wad of $100 bills inside. She started trying to separate the bills and noticed that they were falling apart in her hands. Due to the enviromental damage they had recieved inside the jar, they were not separating for her. My sister placed the money back in the jar and waited until her husband got home to quiz him about the stash. She asked him where he found the jar that was behind the microwave. He started to get upset with her until she told him there was money inside. He started getting curious at that time. I guess he didn't even think to look inside to see what was there. She pulled out the money and showed it to him and how it wouldn't separate. They called around (I'm assuming the bank) to find out what to do. They were told to send it in to the treasury dept and they would send you a check for the estimated value. The money was mailed and sometime later, a check from the treasury dept was sent to them for the sum of roughly $8000.

Now mind you, I'm in the military and I don't live anywhere near home or my sister's house. I'm headed back that way for a couple of days at Christmas and I will be taking my detector with me for a little tour around their yard.

This story was told to me by my mother. While I believe my mom completely with everything she says, I had to ask my sister about it just to confirm it. She said it was true but she didn't go into all the details my mom did.

I am hoping to find a few of the jars around the yard that had the coins in them. That would be an awesome Christmas present!!!!!

Saw a show on History Channel or something like that about the money redemption center or whatever it's called, in DC. They have a room full of people whose job it is to take submissions of money that's been rendered unusable, piece it together, and figure out what it was and how much. Though it's not usable, it is still legal tender and still retains face value. They had examples of things like a wad of bills that was chewed by rodents, or some that a senile person burned up. They had rules like if they could identify as little as a serial number, or the same corner on 5 separate bills, they'd say it was legit and send the person the value they could determine.
