GSA holder Morgan ??

Good Evening All,
I am looking at a 1881-cc Morgan ms64 pcgs but was appoached by a dealer to see me one in a GSA folder. NGC states the coins are not in NGC holders and therefore not guaranteed by NGC." I am new in this arena and am uneasy about the GSA. Please advise.
Thank you so much.

    Hi Tom,

NGC started grading the GSA dollars in the GSA holders and put a wrapper type band sort of a thing around the holders with a grade assigned to the coin. So, no, they are not NGC holders, but were indeed graded by NGC. I think the reason they do not guarantee the coins is becuase NGC cannot take them out of the holders to get a better look at the coins. They are also grading them in the soft pack GSA. Good luck with the purchase.

NGC does not provide a grade guarantee for CC Morgans in the original GSA holders, but I wouldn't be too concerned about that fact, since the coin community accepts these grades the same as if they were in the NGC holder. If you were given the opportunity to purchase two coins of equal quality, one in a GSA holder and one not, go with the one in the GSA holder (it is and always will be worth more).

Listen. Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government. Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony.

Buy the coin you prefer. The GSA holder is a nice piece of history but as always buy the coin you prefer.

The GSA holdered coins are sometimes tougher to grade as the original plastic get beat up and it hard to clean.

Your choice... if you want the history, buy the holder, if you want the coin, buy the best you can afford. Cheers, RickO

Look at the coins and buy the better value. If all things are equal, go for the GSA. NGC cannot guarantee the GSA holdered dollars because the slab's integrity is part of all of that and it is not their slab. Other views on why dn't make sense as they would exclude the possibility of crossovers since a crossover grade is assigned before the coin is cracked out and reslabbed. The only advantage NGC would have in grading an ANACS coin over a GSA coin, for instance, is ANACS's previously assessed grade. In the end, anyway, buy nice coins and forget about the guarantees that you'll not likely ever use.

  • Many collectors prefer and pay more for GSA/NGC CC Morgans if only because it is

very unlikely that the coin has been processed/dipped to increase the grade.

    They want original surfaces.

As an example, consider this 1885-CC. Who's to argue NT vs AT?
