POLL: To Sell or Not to Sell?

I have a $20 Saint Gaudens, NGC slabbed MS63. Common date coin, wholesale value is about $1,000. I paid $800 for this coin back in March of this year.

I have started some new sets (raw) recently, and I was thinking.

Should I sell my Saint to fund these new sets (some barber dimes, Walking Liberty Halves.), or keep the saint and fund the sets another way?

Will key date coins rise in value faster than a generic Saint?

Sell and buy a key from the Barber Dime series.

The walker series, IMO, is way too hyped right now.
  • If what some of what I read on these boards and in some articles are true about what gold is expected to do in the near future and if that is the extent of your gold I would keep it.
  • I have a little more gold (<$1,000 worth), and I could get the 1895-O barber dime for about $300...

  • If that is your only gold I would keep it. Saints are beautiful and I think gold is going higher. I'm not sure what $1,000 worth of a key date coin will do in the future, I have more confidence that gold will go up. Naturally this guess about the future is my personal opinion.

There are so many nice $300.00 coins.

Keep the Saint, save up and buy some. No Rush.

  • I would keep the Saint---it has very good upside potential, and what you would get from its sale would not buy a high-grade key.
  • The problem is, if gold falls, then the value of the Saint falls. That is not necessarily the case with the key date coins.

I would sell silver to buy gold, but not vice versa...unless your choice is to return pleasure, not profit.

Saints are beautiful coins, and everyone should have one if they can afford it (in my opinion).

If you like the Saint.. keep it... if you are just in it for speculation - do whatever you feel is right. The market will have little effect on one Saint... now if you had a hundred, or key dates in MS68... well, the market will not affect those major coins anyway, and a hundred or two could realize a decent profit in an up market. Cheers, RickO
