My 1909-O Barber Quarter

Another 1909-O Barber percolates to the surface. I found this coin on the side of a graded dirt road about 15 years ago and only last night decided to research a little on what I had. Thought you collectors might like to see the images I made from my scanner.

No telling how long it was in the ground. But, seems to have held up reasonably well for its hard times.

At the Picasa image hosting site, once images are clicked to enlarge, there's an option on the right side of the screen to download the full 850x850 pixel images.

You should be able to see it now. image

For a road find and such an old date, it is in pretty good condition.

Welcome to the Forums, Sumrica! Nice find, your 1909-O quarter looks like VF details, with some corrosion (as expected given it was in the ground).

  • Wow, of all the coins to find in the dirt ... that's a pretty good one !!!!!! The 1909-O quarter is one of my favorites within the Barber quarter series. Have you done anything to it as far as washing/cleaning, etc ... just curious ... it looks pretty good. Are the dark patches on the reverse discoloration, or is there tar or gunk on the coin?

This is definitely the CPOTD. "Cool Post of the Day".
  • Sunnywood, I don't recall doing any cleaning besides rinsing it with water. The dark spot on the back is a shiny spot. The flatbed scanner didn't show the shine. My best memory was that some dirt was clinging to that spot and when I flecked it off it, sadly, created the blemish.

Guessing: Since I live on the Mississippi coast, I guess it might not be too unusual for a coin to show up with the New Orleans mint mark.

This is the first and, likely, the last thing of any significance I'll find in my life. I was looking for arrowheads at the time and STILL have never found one.

Never found an arrowhead?? Wow. I have good luck in creek beds after the first big rain of the season.

O mints wouldnt be uncommon down there...but an 09-O barber is a tough coin!
  • Congratulations on a terrific find, and welcome to the forums. That's a date I've been searching for in the VF - AU grades, for about 4 years now. Maybe I should invest in a metal detector or search for arrowheads instead......I may have better luck. image
