I attended the show on Friday. It was a day packed with coin action that included a presentation, auction, and dealers.
The highlight of the show was a presentation given by (our own) Stuart on "Collecting Proof Like and Deep Mirrored Coins" The education session was top notch and included Stuart sharing his knowledge, reference materials and a exhibit. The learning session contained a mix of history and current data to educate those interested in the fine art of collecting DMPL coins. We were also fortune to have on hand an exhibit of a world class DMPL morgan dollar collection including an 1889 CC in 64DMPL. The exhibit provided live examples of coins that were DMPL with mirrors as deep as they get, an example of a coin that is DMPL on the obverse and PL on the reverse therefore graded PL on the holder. The exhibit also included a variety of different holders.
I attended my first coin auction in person and was successful in winning a couple of lots. The fine staff at Heritage put on a profession first class auction. Their staff was very friendly and a pleasure to deal with. I arrived at the show early to view the lots prior to the auction. The auction was during the coin show and was attended by about a dozen to twenty people in person. It was interesting to see how the process works.
I won a 1892 CC 63pl
and a 1886 66pl
After the auction, I talked with as many dealers as I could. It was a crazy day for most of them as well, trying to cram in grading, whole sale buying, auction, and selling to the public a little. I was able to buy a couple of coins on the floor but didn't scour the material as usual. I got a couple of safe picks from the usual dealers.
Overall, it probably was an above average show. It was very busy and included a little bit of everything. It is a show that seems to get a little better every year as it works out small things here and there.

Love that '86 66PL!
Experience the World through Numismatics...it's more than you can imagine.
I had fun on Saturday volunteering at the Pick a Penny event for the kids. We had mounds of Lincoln cents arrayed on the tables, with lights and magnifying glasses and gave each child a half hour to find and fit in as many pennies as the could to fill the album, which they could then take home.
I'm glad to hear the coin club was pleased with the results of the show. When is the next club meeting? I need to take the time to participate.
There was also a large selection of dealers with foreign coins and I noticed some new dealer booths as well.
The show had a lot to offer.
<< <i>Fellow members of the Greater Houston Coin club think that this past weekend's Money Show was the best coin show since the ANA last came to town. >>
It might have even been better if people knew it was going on.
For years we have had two big shows, I don't count Bellaire anymore.
The Money Show has always been in January and the Pasadena show has always been on Thanksgiving weekend. Always thought that was an incredibly foolish choice as many of us have family obligations and may even be out of town for the same reasons. I thought with Thanksgiving being early this year, better minds would prevail and the show would be the weekend after for a change. Foolish thinking on my part, obviously.
Today, I got a card in the mail inviting me to the Money Show. Great! Good promotion job there. The show was this past weekend.
So now what? We are going to have the two biggest shows of the year on back to back weekends? Worse yet, one of them being Thanksgiving? Is there no intelligence behind coordinating these things?
I used to make all the shows, now it's a stab in the dark to even know when they are. I would have liked to have made it, but since I only got the card today, and my time machine is on the fritz, I guess I'll wait to see what sort of crapshoot happens next year.
I gather we now have no more Money Show in January?
Here's an idea, let's just have all three shows, including Bellaire's questionable effort, on Christmas Day from now on. No, I'm not a happy camper.

The location is incorrect on the website:

but contact one of the officers listed there, like Gail Brichford, for more details on the December meeting.
I like both the Coin Week and Summer Show that the Bellaire Coin Club hosts and try to attend each. The Pasadena Show around Thanksgiving is a little farther out of the way for me, so I attend that less often. The Greater Houston Coin Club is doing its best to develop a significant Third Coast Show, but there have been a number of bumps in the road. Hopefully things will improve over time as far as scheduling and such.
me. But, I noticed the people I talked to were really upbeat that it was going to
be good. And from what I've been hearing it was. I'm waiting to hear how the
2 currency dealers did that I talked to.

Their website couldn't have been any more clear:

Also, I believe the TNA will be hosting a late winter show in Houston so you should probably check their website.
Hopefully the Thanksgiving show figures it out that they've been upstaged and they move to a more convenient time of year, because the Money show is quite successful and I don't expect it to move again, now that it has landed a major auction.

Website?
I wasn't even aware they had one. It may be clear but if one doesn't know about it, it doesn't do much good. Sure, I'm on the mailing list, but sending me a card that arrives after the show is over is only slightly better than a website that one doesn't know about.
My point is that they didn't do a very good job of making this show public knowledge. I've been going in January for years and years now, how was I supposed to know of the date change? Maybe if they had mailed out the cards just a bit earlier? Nah! Excuse me for thinking logically. I've always been disappointed that a city the size of Houston couldn't do a better job of organizing and having more and bigger shows. It's actually kind of embarrassing when you think about it.

This was my 2nd time setting up.... both times I found certain things promised were a bit overstated.... I'll leave it at that since I think of Carl as a friend and want the show to do well
I was going to go to the auction on Friday to try and score a nice saint I had been watching for a few weeks and I was expecting to bid maybe $1600 for it. Well I checked the website after the auction and it went for over $2100 so that wasn't going to be my coin anyway...just as well. I wanted to work on my Kennedy Dansco that I was trying to make out of bank roll searches until I hit the wall. I searched at the Pasadena show and it was kind of fun picking through dealer books for coins, a new experience for me.
Thanks so much for posting the report, Dizzle. Stuart is so knowledgable about coins and it is always a treat to catch some of his wisdom. So, I didn't get to hear Stuart, didn't get my coin, didn't get to work on my Kennedy album, and completely missed the gang so I'll just wait till it comes around on the guitar again and chord on in.
Coin ON!
Mhammerman, we did talk about you at the show. We tried to save some gold for you but the best we could do was a toast in your honor.
123cents, let us know how the grading results turn out. I had intended to do the same but ran out of time.
