Garrett Ace 250, How deep does it go with the 9x12 coil?

ACE 250 Pro Graphic Target ID Metal Detector
with both 6.5 x 9" and 9 x 12" PROformance Searchcoils

Contemplating purchasing this detector, I have basically no experience detecting at all, but want to give it a try. Is the predator a better model? I will be hunting on old farms and perhaps the eastern shore area. Would like to find coins, but I live in Delaware, so there may be historical objects of interest . I know there were historical battles fought in this area. Tell me what machine would be best for me. Thanks for info. Also , I don't want to spend too much money until I know if I will enjoy it.

William (30AnvZ28) came and visited me this summer and used one. It had that elliptical coil. In one particular traffic island (median strip) we hunted, I watched him dig a 1927 chauffer badge from at least nine inches down, maybe more. Granted, the brass badge was a bigger target than most coins are, which means one could expect better depth on such an item, but from all I have seen, the 250 with the elliptical coil has what it takes to get those older coins. For the money, it is an excellent starter machine, and as you mentioned, it is best not to spend too much money and buy too much detector until you really know how much the hobby will appeal to you.

  • I found a clad dime at 7'' with my Garrett 250. I think it will go deeper as I learn how to use it. I bought mine Nov. 06.
I think the Garrett 250 is a perfect machine for a beginner. So far my best coin find was a 1937 Mercury dime. I did manage to find a friends diamond earring. As they say here, learn your machine.

  • I was using a 9X12" in my backyard this past summer and I swear I must have dug about 14-16' into the ground. I never measured but my elbow was almost in the hole. I thought it may have been the size of the target as it was fairly large but I'm not sure.
