The Official Steve Young Thread

Hello Everyone,
As some of you know, I collect Steve Young cards. Back in the 1990's I collected Marino and Young. Around when Marino retired I sold all of them, at very fair prices I thought, but the Youngs were not reallyworth enough to mess with. Years later and along came eBay, and Marino and Young where elected into the HOF in the same year. Along the way I have continued to add to the Young collection from time to time. Currently I have about 1300 different Young cards and I am #1 in the Steve Young master and basic PSA registries. Mind you it is more from lack of effort from others, but it is what it is.
So anyway, the point of this possible/likely ongoing thread is to help keep me interested in sport cards, let others know I collect Young (which can't be a bad thing) and to show cards I think are interesting, cool, neat, ugly or whatever.
I guess I will start this off with two cards I noticed something interesting about the other day....
This is a 1994 Pro Line Autographed Steve Young card. It has the same front as the normal Steve Young card (only signed and numbered) and the "Congra.." thing on the back.
![image](http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s17/ksmeteoriteguy/Steve%20Young/1994ProlineAutographed.jpg)
And this is a 1994 Collectors Edge #180 Steve Young 1st Day card. It is like an artist proof card and to bug people like me there are 6-7 versions of the card.

1998 Finest #70 Steve Young Refractor, both Protected and Unprotected versions. Notice card backs are a little different.

HOF SIGNED FOOTBALL RCS
"Both Protector and No-Protector versions had parallel Refractor versions for all 270 cards. Protector Refractors were inserted one per 12 packs and had only the front of the card with a Refractor finish, while No-Protector Refractors were inserted one per 24 packs and were basically a double-sized Refractor. No-Protector Refractor versions of the 30 rookies (121-150) were interested into Series I packs, while Protector versions were only in Series II packs."

"Do you have a list of what you have or need on Young cards? I have a good amount here as well...
send me a PM"
I do not have a list of what I have or what I am missing. There are around 3600 recognized Steve Young cards so it would likely be easier to list what I have, but I just don't have the time right now. If you have a list a priced you want feel free to pass it along. I guess I should note that eBay has made it hard for me to purchase Young cards elsewhere. I can usually purchase cards I am missing around 10% book, and much less in large lots.
"I collect Young as well, I am at 950 different cards. I have almost 200 different duplicates, if you want a list, let me know, always looking to trade for cards I don't have."
I would love to see a trade list. I have a few 800 ct. boxes of extra Youngs.
"will start the Official Larry Allen thread next. Might not get a lot of replies but once he makes the HOF the action should heat up!"
Couldn't hurt. Never was a Dallas fan,of course Young usually lost to Aikman or Favre, but Larry Allen was always cool. I would have hated to line up on the other side against him.

Here is an unusual find that was in an eBay lot a few months ago...it is a no foil printing error.

Welcome to the boards.
That is some Young collection you have. I collect too many things (including 30-40 different PSA sets, meteorites (which make PSA cards look cheap) and various electronic and scientic equipment for field work.
Looking forward to seeing your postings....also you would not happen to be wilson49ers or something like that on eBay? He seems to be my biggest eBay rival. Nice to meet you if it is (and even if it isn't).

"Game used" cards with things not related to the player don't seem right...

I know list members have stayed up a many nights wondering what is the difference in the 1996 Fleer Steve Young and the like 1996 Fleer Shell Steve Young. Well, wonder no more.

The 2002 Score QBC Materials cards came in ungraded SGC card in "uncirculated" condition. I believe they were box toppers. These cards feature "event used" jersey and football pieces from the 2002 Quarterback Challange. The 1999 retired Young was one of several ex players apparently invited to compete.
All red swatch...
Red and black swatch....I think it is part of the "O" or the "G" in "YOUNG" on the back (?)
Red, white and black swatch....I think this is part of the Addias logo (?)
Not exactly game used....but hey, pretty hard for the patch fakers to mess with.

Number one is still number one, Mark
And here is the one I got today....
I guess this is a piece of collar? It is not jersey material, but I see no signs of tamper (around window or sides of card) and the rest of the auctions by the seller an everything looked good. (Lots of game used cards, almost all one color swatches, 99.9% feedback).
Missing an all white one, which I have seen several times, so I guess I am in no hurry.

I just got back from Books-A-Million where I went to get a specific book and I found a book named TYRANNOSAUR CANYON by Douglas Preston in the discount bin that caught my eye. I'm sure you can get the full summary on Amazon, but it's a mystery/thriller based around a missing moon rock.
I let you know if it's any good.

Thanks for your note Tom. I have sold several thousand meteorite books, mostly science related, but I use to be considered an archivest among my peers so I guess you can say I know meteorite books. If I was to suggest any one book it would be "Rocks from Space" by Richard Norton.
Hey PasadenaMudslide,
Here is my 1988 Topps PSA 10 Steve Young (I also have a PSA 10 of the Walter Payton and I think I am #4 or something like that on the set registry...need to get a PSA 10 of Bo but you know when I do they will start selling for $20 less).
This "Test" 1996 Pro Line Phone card is the first super rare card I even owned. It is numbered out of 49 at a time when low numbered inserts where not that common.

Counted my Steve Young cards while I watched A. Peterson beat my out of the Fantasy Football Super Bowl today. I have 1357, but that counts about 20 extra things like printing plates and error cards. I posted on this list in April that I had just hit 1000, so I guess I am averaging about 2 Young cards a day right now. I am kind of off and on with them as I have too many collecting interest. (At least I don't collect a high dollar player).
Here is something that everyone should have.....a Steve Young Energy Drink. I imagine if you drank three of these a day you would be like Steve Young.

Anyhoo, does anyone remember those funny Wheaties commercials starring Steve? In one he's sitting in a fancy chair in a Hugh Hefner robe talking about Crispy Wheaties 'n Raisins and then showing a linebacker guy (forget the name) in uniform saying "I love the crunch!!" and then tries to tackle Steve but tackles the end table/lamp instead. To which Steve mockingly replies, "Linebackers..."

Not as cool, my Young post for the day....
The 1991 Ultra, Fleer's first attempt at a premium card, was very premium.
But they bounced back nicely with this 1992 issue....

Here are two 1994 Collector's Choice "You Crash The Game" #C1 Steve Young Bronze Redemption Cards.
All the 1994 Collector's Choice "You Crash The Game" Redemption Cards have a gold UD logo on bottom and then matching foil around the "crash" logo on back. In other words the gold redemption has gold foil around the crash and a gold UD logo, the silver has silver foil around the crash and a gold UD logo and the bronze has bronze foilaround the crash and a gold UD logo. So anyway, was checking a few YCG's in case UD messed on the gold foil logo and I found this bronze redemption missing the foil on the back.
Something other PC's might want to keep an eye out for.

I could not figure out how to color the card so I never sent it in....
Forward two years and Collectors Choice became "MVP" which included the winner pieces of art in an insert set....which included two Youngs. It does not appear to me the winners drew on a card....or at least I have always wondered.

There are several different auto and a couple jersey cards I do not have yet. No big hurry. To be honest the only must have was the basic card.
I hope they put him in Series B, and if they do, I apologize to those that pull him (Young is one of the cheaper Series A cards it seems.)

Looks good to me, but I am no Young autograph expert.
Hello Allen,
Your Young does have many basic Young sig traits however I don't really like it. It looks crunched compared to his normal sig., but I always think his sig. looks funny when with a fat market.
Here is a non-certified card, with a good photo and what I would call the perfect Young signature. (Not my auction).
ebay linky
When Young played he would send out a preprint signed photo with a letter the same. I see these on ebay all the time as real and wouldn't mind having them for the collection....just not at real autograph price.

Have been adding a lot to the Young collection lately but have not been very good at scanning/taking pictures. Getting that PSA 9 RC a couple months ago has been kind of a free pass to add a few odd ball items.
Here is one of my latest addition.
A Steve Young and Jerry Rice signed mini-helmets in a neat two helmet case. Both helmets are certified by JSA. Also, the Jerry Rice has the Rice hologram and the Steve Young has the Young hologram. These holograms are applied to items at paid signings right after the items are signed. Most star players now use them.

Here is one of the more unusual items I have found. It is a 1994 Classic paper plate lot still sealed with a Young plate on top. No ideal who is under Steve, but other 1994 QB Club members is likely a good guess.
