<< <i>I would think that Earl Campbell beserves a place on that list somewhere. Offense should be represented. >>
He deserves to be on that list too.
Toughest life might be Sean Taylor
Collecting 1970s Topps baseball wax, rack and cello packs, as well as PCGS graded Half Cents, Large Cents, Two Cent pieces and Three Cent Silver pieces.
I feel its tough to compare some of these guys... ever see still game photos from the 1950's and early 60's to see how some of these guys got smacked up and just kept playing?
Butkus and Nitchki make it... what about Ba Ba Smith, Alex Karras among others?
Good question Dizz... just can't limit it to 5
Experience the World through Numismatics...it's more than you can imagine.

Sweetness may have been, pound for pound, one of the toughest men to play the game. The only way Walter was going to go out of bounds without a fight was to stop the clock intentionally. He was not a giant by NFL standards, but sure played like he was.

1972 Football-9's high#'s
1965 Football-8's
1958 Topps FB-7-8
<< <i>Jim Otto Jack Tatum Joe Greene Jack Youngblood Jim Marshall >>
Would you include Tatum if he had not paralyzed Darryl Stingley?
1. Ronnie Lott - Miss a game v. lose part of a finger. Easy choice. Lose part of a finger.
2. Vincent Edward "Bo" Jackson - See Brian Bosworth.
3. Lawrence Taylor - See Joe Theismann.
4. John Lynch - Nothing to back him up, but I always thought he was one awesome NFL player.
5. Ray Lewis - Downright lethal in my opinion.
Honorable Mention
1. Chuck Cecil
/s/ JackWESQ
Lyle Alzado
Gary Fencik
Ray Nitsche
Jack Lambert

<< <i>I think you have to at least give honorable mention to Emmitt who not only played hurt, but played WELL hurt.

i thought emmitt credited pronlonging his career with avoiding hits and going out of bounds. Doesnt sound like the toughest to me.

The Stingley hit was tragic and a freak accident. Tatum was one of the hardest hitters in the game long before that. In his first pro game he knocked out Colts Hall of fame tight end John Mackey and Tom Mitchell. The famous hit in Super Bowl Xl when Sammy White Helmet went flying off. The hit on Earl Campbell when it usually with take 2 or more players to bring Earl down. You probably never saw Jack Tatum play or else you wouldn't of even mention the Stingley hit.
oh, this ISNT a spoof thread?

Sicko award
Matt Millen - One sick puppy. In college he and the gang would mow of cats heads with a mower before the game to get pumped up

Might have to give that to Kitna, after seeing him play this year and all the hits he has gotten up from!!!
<< <i>Jack Youngblood - Any one that can play an entire play off game with a broken leg is "Balls"

Sounds like an Urban Legend to me, same rumour was going around about this kid back in High School in the 80s.
1957 Topps PSA
1961 Fleer SGC
Jimmy Brown
Mike Curtis
Fred Williamson
Ben Davidson
Seems like Steve Young should also get some kind of honorable mention just for taking all those concussions and still being able to speak clearly on TV.
And he SHOULD BE IN THE HALL OF FAME!
<< <i>#1 has to be Jim Marshall. His nickname is Iron Man for a reason. As a defensive end (not a punter or a kicker) he played in 282 consecutive regular season games (302 w/ playoffs).
And he SHOULD BE IN THE HALL OF FAME! >>
playing a long time doesn't equal being the toughest ever. I'm not sure that it's even debateable that Butkus would not be #1.
I would add Dick "Night Train" Lane
Are you kidding me? I had to put a hyphen in his last name! They highlighted from the T to the next T and said it was a forbidden word? Gimme a break.
Being a Steeler fan I also have to add these guys to the list:
Hines Ward - Arguably the hardest hitting (blocking) WR of all time.
Jerome Bettis - Ran over Brian Urlacher on his way to the end zone. Was famous for "trucking" defenders to get those tough short yards.
Terry Bradshaw - Ran head on into defenders instead of scrambling out of bounds.
You will laugh at this, but i will never forget this hit. NOLAN CROMWELL (rams). They were playing the Oilers at Houston. Earl Campbell broke down the sideline for a huge gain---Until-- he tried to head butt Nolan. Both were going full speed at each other. They hit each other so hard they fell out of bounds together. I had never seen ANYONE stop Earl on a dime and actually send him back one step.
Sure it's easy to go with the popular names but he gets my vote.
<< <i>Jack Lambert has to be right up on top of the list. He being the one who asked if the league was going to make the QBs wear dresses after he continuously knocked out Brian Sipe with clean hits. He also threw Cliff Harris to the ground in SB X for showing up their kicker.

Butkus
Dick Night Train Lane
Larry Wilson, who I once saw intercept a pass with both hands in casts.
Pound for pound no one was tougher than these guys, some as tough but none tougher.
I'd say:
Ray Lewis
Lorenzo Neal
Favre
Ed Reed
