Home Metal Detecting

Bunch of firsts for me!!

How's everyone doing? It's been awhile since I've posted here--lets just say I've had a busy summer. I spent almost 5 months over in Baghdad Iraq and got back at the very end of Sept. I did a little bit of detecting in Oct, but not too much--I had quite a bit of catching up to do with my family.

The month of November has been very good for me in detecting though. I have been out about 5 or 6 times and each time seems to get better. For the most part, I've been hunting in an older park in town and I have found quite a few coins there. I also found an old ring that at first glance appeared to be real but after having it out of the ground for a few minutes, I realized I'd been duped. Oh well, I've heard the phrase, "A ring is a ring." I would have preferred a gold or silver, but those will come in due time. This past week, I was talking with a guy at work and he mentioned that he had a large front yard. I casually asked him if he minded if I came over and swung the detector around his yard and he said it would be fine. I know that the area he lives in is an older section of the town and I wanted to just see what all I could find. The area dates to around 1900 or so--I was hoping for some nice finds. Well, I wasn't disappointed. I know that these are not all that significant to some of the finds posted on here, but this was probably my best day of detecting since I returned from England in February of 2006.

I get out the detector, turn it on and head to a large tree that is 15 feet or so away from me. On the way, I notice that I wasn't hearing too much from the 2500 so I looked down to see what settings I had it on. I had it set to jewelry and then I get my first tone. It's registering a quarter about 2 inches deep. I'm just a few feet from the tree and I start thinking I've found a silver one. Well, the first coin I pull out is a 1997 quarter. Not exactly what I was looking for, but at least it's a coin and not trash. A few swings away, I pull up a new Lincoln. I'm beginning to think that his kids have lost a little bit of coinage here and that would be all I would find. I move on in closer to the house and I start getting a solid gold tone. I'm thinking, this could be it. Well, it seems that he has one of those underground fences to keep his boxer bulldog in the yard. One of his kids was out in the yard and he pointed out to me where the wires and holding pegs would be. I'm glad he helped out--it saved me a little bit of digging. As I move around his yard, I start getting some wheaties. I dig about 3 or 4 and I got to thinking--"Lordmarcovan says it's about one silver to 10 wheaties or so"--I've only got 6 or 7 more wheaties to dig to get that silver. Much to my surprise, the next signal I get is a dime at 2 inches. I'm thinking modern stuff, but then I pop out a silver 64 D Rosie. I'm surprised that it was so close to the top, but with this hard Oklahoma dirt, I could understand. I keep moving around the yard and find a few more wheaties. 1925, 1930d, 58d X2, and so one. The yard obviously had never been detected and I was happy about that. I get another signal that was jumpy. I thought to begin with it was a pulltab--giving the double hits but it was jumping between dime and penny at 3 inches. I dig and I see why it was jumpy. A 1936S wheatie jammed up next to a 56d Rosie. I did find some more modern coins, pennies, nickels and dimes, but I was pleased with the older coins I was pulling. I decided to move on over towards the driveway and that's where my best find came about. I get a solid quarter signal at 6 inches. I dig and look down into the hole to find a first for me--1929S Standing Liberty quarter. If I would have had to leave at that time, I would have been happy. Needless to say, I stayed another hour and found two more firsts for me. 1943D silver war nickel and 1943D Mercury dime. In total, I found 6 silver coins in this one hunt. About a week prior, I had found my first American silver coin (I say this because I did find a hammered silver coin while I was stationed in England) another silver Rosie. I'm glad that I've had the opportunity to get out and detect and hopefully the silver keeps coming.

Also, I did find a 1944 Mexico 20 Centavos.

Here are some pics of the finds.

Thanks for looking,

Nice haul Speer. The standing liberty quarter is great. None of mine have dates (pre-1925). I love hunting yards and private properties because of the potential of untapped goods and generally much less trash so you can dig almost all of the signals.

    Very nice!!
6 silver day is smokin'. I've yet to break the three barrier.
  • Thanks all. As far as the yard--my coworker's son followed me around for most of the time I was detecting and he was as excited as I was. I stayed about 2.5 to 3 hours out there and I could go back over the yard again and pay particular attention griding certain parts of the yard. I saw my opportunity when I was getting ready to leave--the coworker and his son were on the front porch and I asked his son if he would like to try detecting. He said he would. I told him that if his dad didn't mind, I would come back this next weekend, bring the Ace250 and let his son have a swing around the yard. If the weather hangs on and it isn't too cold this weekend, I plan on going back and bring both of the detectors--one for me and the second for the son. Hopefully the backyard will be as productive as the front. I'll let everyone know how it works out. Also, there are a few other coworkers who live near him and I'm going to talk to them within the next couple of days and see if I can't get into there yards also. In addition to those two yards, there is a friend of ours who lives near there also and I've been asking her for months if I could hunt her yard--she was always a little apprehensive about it--her husband doesn't want alot of holes in the yard--I've told her I would take good care and make sure I get everything filled in and that they would hardly be able to tell I was there. Well, I just found out within the last two weeks or so that they are moving around Jun/July time frame and hopefully her and her husband will be more willing to let me hunt now.

As far as the six silvers in one day--I was pumped for sure. I know how hard they are to find--I'm taking it as a very lucky day and I just hope that I can do half that good the rest of the year.

Oh, and congratulations on the milestones. Making "breakthroughs" is always nice. After a while, though, the time period between breakthroughs gets longer and longer. I haven't crossed a significant milestone in years. Maybe 2008 will bring a "first" for me. Of course, I gotta get out and dig a lot more than I've been doing, if I hope to have any success.

    good job
  • never assume that you are the first to be there just because you find stuff, i once detected an old school (now a residence) and the lady that owned it told me there were about 20 people that hunted the yard that she knew of, well, that was AFTER i found a roll and a half of wheat cents, a dozen silver dimes, a few indians and a 2" deep 1897-0 barber half that i dont see how ANYONE could miss people leave stuff behind, im sure i did too considering the ground was bone dry
  • I didn't notice if anyone said it......... WELCOME BACK !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Baghdad is a great place to be from.............. far away from.

edited to add: Lord M beat me to it but then he's first in a lot of things.
