Neither coin is rare except in specific grades. The overdate is scarce at best in the lower circulated ranges. It only becomes rare in Mint state. The 3 legged isn't even scarce in any grade except Good, VG, and the higher levels of Mint state, such as MS65 or better. I suppose, however that's irrelevant to those who can't afford them. The only way I could obtain either was to cherrypick them or get one by trading other cherrypicked varieties for them. I guess you could say I cherrypicked my 3 legged as I only paid around $300 for an MS62 example back in 2000.

But, in the end, collect what you want and to hell with the empty holes.
I can't ignore them, I had three empty holes in my barber quarter coin album eating away at me for a long, long, time. You know the trio (1896-S, 1901-S and 1913-S), Finally one day I convinced myself to go-for-it and purchased all three (took about 3 years to find the right ones). I got lucky, I purchased the 1901-S from J.J. Teaparty, just before the big price increases for this date.
Maybe I have some kind of a phobia. (Got to fill the empty hole phobia) When (If) I sell my coins, I want all the key dates included. All spaces filled. All sets complete. I do set out to fail. Having an empty space in my coins album shows that I have failed in my mission. Am I sick? retarded? Does anyone else have this fear of incompletion? Coin albums are the only organized things that I have in my life.
When I was in grade school, I was more afraid of an "incomplete" on my test, then a failing grade (F).

I don't. My collection includes the coins I want it to and doesn't include the ones I don't. Other opinions don't matter. I'm not spending money to buy a coin that someone else thinks I should have, in order to have a "complete" set.
