The AL MVP is not based on who comes up in a clutch situation, it's based on numbers. And nobody had numbers like he did.
This is not a time to bash him. I congratulate Alex Rodriguez on his AL MVP award.
<< <i>yup, but even more amazing is the fact that the guy continues to choke when it counts... in the clutch. The true greats are great most of the time, but elevate to another level when it's crunch time. Guys like Gretzky, Bird, Jordan, Montana, Rice, Elway, and most recently, Ortiz & Beckett are in a different class than Pay-Rod all together because they actually over-perform when it's most important! Admitedly, the guy puts up huge regular season numbers, but he's simply not a winner, and I can't see any team he's on ever going all the way. Good thing he appears to be locked up with the Yanks again
You named Gretzky, Bird, Jordan, Montana, Rice, Elway who are greats, but baseball is a different game. Big Papi does seem to have a way of getting the big hits, but I'll bet most of the other players you can name who are HOF worthy baseball players that come up big are pitchers. Hitters can't demand the ball, puck or be sure that they get to do anything when they come up to bat if the pitcher wants to pitch around them.

How many Super Bowl rings did Elway have when he was Arod's age? How many times did he get blown out in the Super Bowl? How do Arod's numbers compare to Williams and Mays in the post season? He can play for my team any time.

give your girlfriend a nice once-over for us all, OK?
and tell your wife hi!!
<< <i>Elway was not clutch in the playoffs, Terrell Davis got him his rings. >>
Alex Rodriguez has played in eight postseason series. Five of those times he was definitely hit better than the rest of the teams lineup. If he had better teammates and won he would be praised for being so clutch and elevating his game so much. That is the exactly what happened with Elway, amazingly before the season they beat Green Bay in the Super Bowl Elway had 15 playoff games and the total stats from those games fit in nearly perfectly with a typical Elway season. The same is true for Michael Jordan
(I like to give as much credit to the line as Davis for the Broncos Super Bowls)
It always amazes me how people talk about "x" $$ per year, when in fact the baseball season consists of approximatley 6 months. Imagine making more than a mil a week for playing baseball 6 days a week for less than 2 hours per day. So, A-Rod makes $27.5m per season, gotta give the guy credit for having the skills to demand such a mind-numbing salary.
Congrats A-Rod, from a more than 50-year HUGE Red Sox fan.
<< <i>Not an A-Rod fan, but you gotta give the guy his due, he put up some huge numbers. Interestingly, he seems to not be a clutch player (ala Mr. October). I'm just thankful the Red Sox didn't go after him, and I'm even happier that Mike Lowell just signed with the Red Sox for 3 years.

<< <i>Bird, Jordan, Montana, Rice, et al. were among the very best during the playoffs and postseason. They were also the very best during regular season games. If anything these are perfect examples of players who did not elevate themselves when it mattered most, they simply contiued along at high levels. My guess is that if Alex Rodriguez is given enough postseason opportunities, it will balance out in the end. It is already looking that way, .279/.361/.483 is better than league average during his career. Far better than some other recent AL MVPs. >>
Somewhat agree with the first part of what you say, but don't you think that 8 post-season series are enough to indicate what kind of clutch performer someone is? Plus, the majority of his good playoff numbers came when he was with the Mariners when there was much less pressure on him (due to low expectations for the M's). Since then, and getting his risiculous contract, his first Yanks series was good, but the next 4 were attrocious: 15 for 75 with 21 K's and only 6 RBI! No matter how you cut it, that's really bad... but for a guy making $25 mil/yr... that's pathetic.
Again I will admit that based on regular season stats alone, stray-rod deserved the MVP this year... no denying that. I'm just saying that he's a proven choker in the post-season and that's not even mentioned what an all around bad guys he is. His pathetic antics both on and off the field are a discrace to the game. As I said in another thread, they should pack that guy up with pumpkin head Bonds and ship them off to some deserted island.. the game would be much better without either of them.

<< <i>uhhhh... doesn't Elway hold the record for the most 4th qtr combacks in NFL history? If that's not clutch, what is? Sure, Davis contributed, but Elway was the key cog that made it happen. Sure, everything is relative... maybe Favre past him for 4th qtr comeback now but I'm sure Elway has more per season than Favre. Plus, I guy like Montana didn't have as many as he could have since he was on a great team that was usaully ahead going into the 4th qtr. Still, anyone who knows anything about football knows that Elway was one of the top clutch performers of all time... and I am not even a big Elway fan, btw. >>
Your probably right about Elway, I have a strong dislike for him.
My bad for getting off-subject.
I think there has to be better options to signing A-rod for that kind of money. Great in regular season obviously, doesn't look too good to sign and let you down for that kind of money in the playoffs and the obvious distractions he brings to the clubhouse.
but alas.....
