colorized carp on coins

Hello all,

Stopped at the flea market on the way home today and picked up 3 common date peace dollars that have the colorized carp all over them.

Got them well below spot...to pack away in my silver hoard...image

But before doing so I would like to remove the paint-job. Anyone have any experience doing this?

Will a bath in acetone take the carp off?image

Thanks

You might want to take them to a fish market to get the carp off image

If you don't care about the coins, dip them in paint thinner and/or acetone.

Acetone will remove some paints... (it is, after all, a nail polish remover)... and since it is just for your stash, if that does not work, then regular paint removers will... coins, if not bathed, (after paint remover - not acetone) will tend to 'tone'. image Cheers, RickO

Hey Ricko....it looks like a silk-screen process......so either method of removal would be cool?

  • They are just being koi.

Now how do you knock a fish like that out? I would imagine a fish that size should put up quite a fight and be a little hard to hold in place. image

you could try soaking in paint thinner, gasoline, lacquer remover, ....

just don't be near any flames or cigarettes
  • carp dont move around a whole lot, they are very docile. that fish would stay still enough for a pic (even looks like its smiling) then swim away once back in the water.

Carp will take your bait and run like hell.Get 'em on shore and they don't flop around at all. Go figure. image

Several years ago we bought in some colorized 1/10th ounce gold eagles, and sometime later I noticed that one of them was a 1999-W. Decided to take the red, white and blue paint off, and had a heckuva a time doing so. Acetone did nothing to it. Took a long soak in paint thinner in an airtight jar, followed by some Q-tip work, followed by another soak, etc.

THis does not sound encouraging...perhaps I should bypass the acetone and go straight to the high power stuff!

  • Why you gotta carp on my last name?
