Does this mint mark look 'added' to you?

I've seen many a mint mark in my time that looks exactly like this one. There's a slight depression and a slight discoloration around the mintmark.

Is this a tell tale sign of an 'added' mintmark?

By the way, the coin is a 1932-s.

What's going on with the edge below the R? Is that just an impact or is there any sign of something more sinister?

The slight depression is normal as it's caused by metal displacement in the die when the mint mark is punched in. However, the location on that one looks a little high to me.

    Here's a genuine one:

  • It appears to be cleaned, but I'm not sure about the mintmark

Does look odd, and high too. Not a clear MM for such a UNC type coin. Has it been cleaned as well? See
    lots of parallel lines. Hmmmmm

It's not mine. It's currently on sale on Ebay.

Looks suspicious... I would pass on this one... unless it goes cheap.. then spring for authentication... JMO.. probably added MM. Cheers, RickO
  • Looks a little odd, but hard to tell from the pic. A genuine 32-S should have a weak motto on the obverse, so check for that. If it's bold, then I think it's bad for sure. If it's weak, there still could be other reasons it's bad, but that's one thing I look for.

Here's another genuine '32-S reverse. The mint mark appears to be higher than on Russ's coin, and more like the one from DoubleEagle59. There are diagnostic die polish marks on genuine coins, but I can't find it right now. Perhaps someone else is more organized than I am.
