Employees evacuated a building at EBay's offices on Hamilton Avenue this morning after someone found a suspicious package there, San Jose police officer Jermaine Thomas said.
Reports about the package first came in to San Jose police dispatchers at around 9:24 a.m. It is unclear what the package is at this time. Thomas did not know how many people were effected by the evacuation order.

Some streets near the intersection of Bascom Avenue and Hamilton have been blocked off, Thomas said.

The San Jose Police Department's bomb squad is on the scene.

The report comes about a year after someone set off a pipe bomb at an EBay office in North San Jose. No one was injured in that blast on Halloween night.

Because of a lack of leads, Sgt. Nick Muyo said the investigation into that case had been closed.

When crews arrived to the scene of the Halloween blast, they found a 6-by-7-foot window had been shattered near a first-floor exit. The window's frame was bent and a light haze covered the area, firefighters said. No flames, however, were visible, nor was there any other damage. >>

Reminds me of an old All in the Family episode when Archie receives a package that 'ticks'. Long story short - they pour water on it in their sink and the 'ticking' turns out to be Edith's egg timer in her pocket. As for the contents of the package - what was once fine cigars (for Archie) are now soaked to the bone. The look on Archie's face is priceless!

I don't recall ever hearing of this type of incident occurring at Ebay before. When you think about it, this day and age Ebay is the perfect place (IMHO) for this sort of thing to happen, real, hoax or paranoid employee. If this is the first time, or one time out of a very few, that's kind of interesting, to me anyway.
I have all kinds of coins, tokens and a few medals. I'm not a big time Stack's Auction collector. I don't collect for investment or value. When I see a coin I think is neat, I grab it. I collect a few coins by year and mint, like Lincoln and Canadian Cents, Westward Journey Nickels, State Quarters, Presidential Dollars and 2 or 3 others. I have some Proof Sets and Uncirculated Sets. I've been collecting for 34 years, so I have a little bit of everything.

Lack of leads? They pissed off a few million customers last week. They could investigate each seller.

According to the news artical posted by Russ:

"The report comes about a year after someone set off a pipe bomb at an EBay office in North San Jose. No one was injured in that blast on Halloween night."

The pipe bomb was set off at Ebay, not delivered there as a "suspicious package." At least that's how I read it. I'm talking about actual packages sent through the mail. image

  • Tells you that a little communication with your customers is always better than none.

There is always a fraction of 1% who snap when faced with a "Brick Wall"....

Ya know, like ending listings with no reason, no way to communicate...taking funds from accounts ala' PayPal.

It all adds up for some and they act.

If the suspicious package didn't have online signature confirmation, couldn't they have just denied receiving it, thus saving everyone all that trouble?

Things like this happen and people wonder why support folks don't give last names....hmmm....I would rather have an irrational customer leave a "suspicious package" at my office/company than at my house image

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

    PCI and SGS strike back.

Looking to clear the place out enough for some "certified" "MS69" "NICE LOOK" coins to slip thru?

I went to my insurance agent's office at 11am this morning 1/2 mile east on Hamilton and I can report that there was a heliocopter in the sky right where ebay campus is. I declined the terrorist coverage on my business policy. Am now thinking twice.image

Someone couldn't take the auction cancelllations anymore.

Many have lost lots of money over this...

    Someone probably snapped.
